In defense of calling America America

Featured Replies

Canadians are not Americans, they are a subset of that population defined as North Americans. Americans are a subset of that population as well.

I know that my Canadian friends will disagree with you.

Any Canadians reading this?

With all due respect , your Canadian friends are ignorant.

With all due respect, the Canadians I know are not ignorant, but neither would they agree with any of the quotes above.

All the would do is politely discuss the matter into oblivion, without coming to any firm conclusion.

(But the discussion would be interesting - for the first week)

It's not really a matter for discussion. It is a simple fact.

It is indeed a simple fact that Canada is in America.

Where might you be from, pray tell?

Canada is not in the NATION of America. There is only one NATION called America. That would be the U.S.A. mate.

Canada IS NOT in America. I'm sorry to be so blunt and I hope it doesn't embarrass you. America is a country. Canada is a country. They are two different countries and Canada the country is not within America the country. Both Canada and America ARE within the continent of North America. North America is a continent. South America is a continent . The continents of North America and South America are sometimes called "The Americas". Any country within North America or South America cxan be said to be in "The Americas". Only The people dwelling within the United States of America can specifically be calle "Americans". Everyone else on those two continents lives in another country by which their nationality is defined. I learned all this in first grade. I'm sorry you did not.

If that still isn't clear to you, look at any map of the World or of the Western Hemisphere of the World.

Does it really matter?

It's a bit of a giggle - like winding up the Scots, Welsh or N. Irish about being 'English' when they are happy to be called 'British' but would always disagree with the 'English' label.

And another thing - the Scots have 'Scotland the Brave' for representative matches, the Welsh have 'Bread of Heaven' or similar, at RU Internationals the combined Irish sides have their own anthem, but we poor English have no distinguishing anthem - whether as England or as the United Kingdom we always have to have 'God Save the Queen'. Why cannot we have something like 'Land of Hope and Glory' or 'Jerusalem'? Both very stirring anthems.

And don't propose 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' - most spectators at rugby internationals don't know more than the first two lines. Bloody Hooray Henry's and Investment bankers who have never touched an oval ball in their lives. And neither they nor their off-road 4wd's have ever touched grass, either.

It matters because it really gets annoying to hear ignorant moralistic lectures about why Americans can't call themselves Americans. bah.gif

Calm down JT. Not quite sure where the " ignorant moralistic lectures" came in...

Most people recognise that the Americans and America are synonymous with residents of and the USA rather than anyother part of North or South Ameica.

The OP showed spectacular ignorance in claiming that there was a continent called America.

Far more interesting is who are/were the original Americans. One theory puts them as migrants from SE Asia (see below).

Secondly few people are aware that German ancestry is the largest rootstock for current non-Hispanic Americans. It's actually fairly obvious as the US has many Germanic characteristics. Also the Union victory in the Civil War was largely due to the enthusiasm and ability of German-American volunteers. Which makes US participation in WW1 and WW2 more striking.

Don't you realise that getting a rise out of Americans is fun? (as HB said about the Scots etc)

There's no need to defend when nobody is attacking.

I thought I had deleted that last post. Not only did it undelete itself, but it bred!

The strange ways of forums!

As Americans, we've a lot to live down in this millenium, so far. We shouldn't have to quibble over facts that any first grader ought to know. It detracts from our war effort , don't you know.

IMHO the greatest strength of the US is that once it focuses on an issue it gets it sorted.

Hence 50 years after the most powerful ( and incredibly intelligently crafted) speech of at least the last 100 years, a black American sits as POTUS. Whether you hate or admire Obama, the key point his presidency highlights is that the US is capable of dramatic change in the right direction. That is what makes the US a truly great nation, and as a non US citizen I salute the ability of the USA to do the right thing as encapsulated in the dream of MLK's speech 50 years ago today.

Hence in the days and weeks after 11Sept 2001 these ads, in amongst the grief and turmoil, underlined for me as a non-American what the country I was living in at the time was all about. It's true strength and potential lies in its people and their belief about what it means tobe an American.

I agree with you. That IS one of the greatest strengths of the USofA. The problem is that strength was based on there being a relatively informed electorate and a relatively responsive group of elected officials. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. More and more, the electorate seeks out information to confirm their pre-confirmed bias' and more and more, regardless of what the electorate wishes for, elected officials act in a manner that is globalist and detrimental to the billions of less fortunate persons on this planet.

It is admirable that a once racist nation could elect a 1/2 Black man, that never knew his Black father and was raised by his White grandparents. That said, it would never have happened ( at least not for Obama) if his presidency hadn't been preceded by George W. Bush's. Obama is not a sign of how enlightened we became. He is a sign of how desperate we were for change and we didn't care if the person replacing the last idiot was equally incompetent. Obama was right about that at least. We wanted CHANGE! Unfortunately, we change from bad to worse.

I didn't watch your video, but to me America's true strength is that regardless of views, we hate everyone else more than we hate each other. People talk about hating Right Wingers and Dumbocrats and queers and niggers, but I don't have that luxury, because they are my friends and neighbors and family.
