Five things farang men must stop wearing

Cultural differences, language barriers, Bangkok maps: these are all things farangs struggle with on a regular basis. As a result they can be forgiven if they're not always, er, fashionable.

That said, there is one thing, a line if you will, that is so consistently crossed and done with such impunity, that I feel like we Thais must speak out. I refer to, of course, the farang fashion faux pas. Farang men, in particular, seem to almost relish flaunting their lack of taste in our faces.

Gentlemen, take note: if you want to look good, these are things you should never wear:

5. Fisherman pants

These are comfortable. No one will argue with you there. And if you're living on Khaosan Road, eating only Pad Thai and hooked up to an IV of cheap Chang they're a required uniform.

Unfortunately, it is just a fact that the only group of Bangkok residents who actually wear fisherman pants and pull it off are the Chinese grandpas in Yaowarat. When you, dear farang, sport a pair it says, “Help me. I’m homeless.”

4. Baggy Pants

We understand your career as a freelance DJ is going great and that you can’t wait to tell your friends back home about how you’re so cool in “BKK”. But why does that mean you're compelled to make an anti-fashion statement by exposing your underwear? It's not attractive and the 1990s are (thankfully) long gone. Pull up your pants, boys.

I must admit I have never seen farangs wandering around in Fisherman pants and I would prefer if fat old men wore baggy pants than skin tight lycra. Maybe Thai's prefer their farang this way.

I'm just thankful that most people actually wear clothes. Any kind of clothes.

As a "Farang" I really would like to read the rest of the article, but the link is dead and the whole bangkok.coconut.co seems to be down!

PS. I already changed my pants, and eager to know more...crazy.gif

pony tail, tats, leather vests on a 60yo on a Harley.

One thing they should wear, though, is suncream

It's amazing that so many men take an interest in what other men are wearing? Must all be metrosexuals? I confess I don't really pay that much attention.

And what are "fisherman pants"? I assume they are not waders?

Do beached Russian whales in microscopic Speedos make the list ?

Thank god I fall into none of those categories :-)

Fishermen's pants are those long rubber pants with the built in gumboots all one piece. You see the guys working on the trawlers wearing them

And yes, Thai fishermen do wear them (I do not).

Well, this is my fishing partner, in my pair of Thai Fisherman's pants.

I don't wear them much anymore, they look better on her.

These fishermans pants are those pants that are tied up around your waste from back to front... Like a one-size-fits-all number that you tie around your waste...

Super comfy for around the house wear... But you'd look like a right dick if you were wearing them outside trying to get your "thai" on...

EDIT: Like the one in HeijoshinCool's picture...

So nice to see the fashion police is out in full force once again,What the hell do i care how other people dress.

The author of that piece should try walking around in Bangkok in a three piece suit all day and write an article about that.

You see some hippy looking dudes going about in fisherman pants, some of them suit them, but there are some atrocious eye damaging abominations out there.

I caught it on Facebook a while ago before the site went down. They were talking about guys wearing these wife beaters, and I personally can't stand them. I've seen myself standing in decent restaurants and clubs and guys wander in wearing them, shorts and flip flops.

At best they're day wear, of an evening smarten up a bit. I saw a guy in Hotshots ( a cabaret bar, decent mainly Thai crowd ) wander in wearing a grey wife beater, shorts and flip flops. His pals were dressed the same way, where he stood out was he was hairier than a silver back gorilla. I was repulsed, the Thais I was with were boaking, his hairy arms matted with sweat. It was disgusting.

As far as I'm concerned it was the doormen to blame, they should be knocking guys dressed like that back. If your going out at night at least put on a smart casual shirt / polo shirt and dress shorts at least. I've guys who are overweight like men can be smart looking, and in Thailand it's not hard, not expensive for slimmer guys to dress sharp.

Ideal day wear for many, atrocious evening wear in a club.

Just like some people can wear singlets and others cannot

The ones that had me mentally shaking my head were the 2 obese blokes I saw in Korat strolling around in "Pattaya Muff Divers Club" and "Sex Instructor - First Lesson Free" T-shirts, with a couple of rough as <deleted> skanky birds clip clopping and braying like donkeys behind them as the "lads" screwed me up.

I've seen more culture under my ****skin.

.

4. Baggy Pants

Somehow think they look better than this

The embassy consular waiting room had a few last week. And they wonder why possibly the staff may get a little tired of explaining why the honey on their might need some paper work to visit.

Excellent article and oh so true.

Not sure why but since some years i got into the habit of wearing them to bed, never outside.
