What's is happening with Thai Airways? Last time it was at Hong Kong.

Lucky the engine only caught-fire on-landing, rather than when taking-off or in-flight.

Hmm...12 people injured, some due to smoke inhalation..they do not sound "safe" to me.

Modern planes are designed to fly with one engine 'not functioning'. This is probably not a Thai Airways problem rather it may have been one of a variety of problems. Bird strike, faulty engine component. This type of incident is not unusual however the good news is that all survived. Remember the Qantas flight out of Singapore a few years ago. Engine malfunctioned yet the crew did a magnificent job of landing a fully loaded 380 boeing safely.

380 is made by airbus not boeing!!!

The engine fire was caused by the plane leaving the runway with enough force that the nose gear failed.

Flight TG-679 landed on runway 19L at 23:26 following a flight from Guangzhou, China. It apparently went off the right side of the runway, causing the nosegear to fail. The airplane was evacuated.

Reportedly a fire erupted in the right hand engine, which was put out by airport fire services.

14 hurt as plane skids off runway in Bangkok: airline

BANGKOK, September 9, 2013 (AFP) - A Thai Airways plane skidded off the runway in Bangkok after the landing gear malfunctioned, slightly injuring more than a dozen passengers as they evacuated the jet, the airline said Monday.

The incident late on Sunday at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport involved an Airbus 330-300 carrying 288 passengers and 14 crew members on a flight from Guangzhou in southern China, the carrier said.

The plane was seen resting on grass on Monday morning next to the runway with its evacuation slides still deployed and the Thai Airways name and logo hastily covered up.

"Sparks were noticed from the vicinity of the right landing gear near the engine; the matter is under investigation," the airline said in a statement.

"The captain took control of the aircraft until it came to a complete stop and passengers were evacuated from the aircraft emergency exits. The operation was conducted by the captain and cabin crew strictly according to emergency procedures."

About 14 people were slightly injured when they escaped down the emergency slides, Thai Airways president Sorajak Kasemsuvan told local television.

"They were sent to hospital but most of them received treatment and were discharged," he added.

The carrier said it would take about 24 hours to remove the aircraft, which could cause flight delays.

The incident comes just over a week after dozens of passengers and crew were injured when a Thai Airways A380 superjumbo hit severe turbulence during a flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong.

Except for the fact that the plane caught fire and skidded of the runway. Pretty normal otherwise.

Quite strange that the 2 'quality' English newspapers have hardly picked up on this , while foreign media have.

Gotta love these fuzzy news stories......Did the plane veer off the runway which caused the nose to fail of course,

or did the nose gear fail on landing causing the plane to veer off the runway ? Or is spin control already at work....

18 years old aircraft ....... thats quite a lot ....

How old you think most planes are before they are put out of service?

That looks a bit more then just skidding a bit the runway, good luck no one's hurt badly. I said that before Thai Airways lost its credibility, they have major cash problems, bad management, that leads to endured use of old aircrafts, probably and no first class maintenance anymore to economise because being under pressure of business competition which often leads to bad service and personnel. Some more incidents they can also say good bye being a member of Star Alliance. An airplane crash in our days easily leads to a bankruptcy with almost no point of return even for a major carrier like TG, look at Lufthansa why do they spent thatkind of tremendous effort on safety because it would extrem to recoup from an aircraft loss, finacially and due to the damaged image. But have we not heard lately the problems of Thai Airways are due to the exchange rates! If not some many lives depends on every flight I would be laughing!

18 years is nothing for a plane, it's practically brand new!

Hey, at least they reacted swiftly to the situation, on the other paper there's a photo of Thai Airways maintenance crews covering the logo on the tail with black paint. facepalm.gif

Correction, as of 9:00 am one the 2 'quality' newspaper made it a headline. The only reporter of this newspaper must have woken up and arrived at the office..

Why is it with Thai accidents, planes, trains, buses, boats, taxis anything - the newspaper never manages to interview any passengers or victims?

It was me stating 2 weeks ago that Thai Airways would have an accident soon.......their safety procedures and crew are not updated.

You act like an expert, with "act" being the operating term since you ignore the role that improper or insufficient maintenance and inspections can play.

Why is it with Thai accidents, planes, trains, buses, boats, taxis anything - the newspaper never manages to interview any passengers or victims?

The Thai media never manage to interview anybody at any time. All they do is grovel and lob soft pitches they have been instructed to ask.

18 years old aircraft ....... thats quite a lot ....

People used to make jokes about the 737s, how old they were, how many takes offs and landings they did every day, but there was something reassuring about a plane that performed so well and so often for so long.
