Russian tourist drowns off Phuket Beach

PHUKET: A 45-year-old Russian tourist drowned off Patong Beach this morning.

Police were informed at 11 am that a body had been seen floating in the ocean near the beach near the Impiana Hotel.

Rescuers on jet-skis brought him back to the beach. Police estimated that he had been dead about three hours. There were no wounds on the body to suggest any cause of death but drowning.

The body of the man, who had been staying at the Thara Patong Hotel, was taken to Patong to await formal identification and collection by relatives.

Another poor victim of Thailand.

Another poor victim of low swimming experience or lack of knowledge for safe beach swimming or cramp or overconfidence or perhaps some or all of these. Happens in Australia almost every day too.

I hope they have some lifeguard system soon. It wont stop all the deaths, but may help the lucky few, who take the security of a lifeguard manned area ...
