Warning: Heavy rain, flash floods for Phuket

PHUKET: -- Today’s sunny weather looks set not to last, after the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department today (September 17) issued a severe weather warning for people in 14 provinces, including Phuket, in Thailand’s West, East and South.

Chatchai Promlert, the department’s director general, warned that people living near hillsides and waterways in Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Petchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Ranong, Trang and Satun should brace for heavy rain, possible flash flooding, forest run-off and mudslides over the next five days, Sept 18-22.

People in risk areas should closely follow the weather forecast and disaster warnings, and strictly comply with the advice given by the department, he said.

There will also be strong wind-generated waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper part of the Gulf of Thailand. All shipping should proceed with caution and small boats should remain ashore during this period, he said.
