Historic sites in 5 provinces damaged by floods

BANGKOK, 7 October 2013 (NNT) - The Culture Ministry revealed that temples and historic sites in five provinces have been damaged by the floods.

Culture Minister Sontaya Kunplome said important sites in provinces including Prachin Buri, Nonthaburi and Ayutthaya have been struck by floods. Fine arts department officials have been using water pumps to drain floodwater and building flood barriers in affected areas.

In many provinces, water levels are rising and the currents remain strong. Over 200 staff members have been assigned to monitor the flooding situation in the Ayutthaya historical park. 307 temples and 3,104 monks in 10 provinces have been affected by the deluge.

Mr Sontaya said the flooding remained under control at most sites. Officers have been assigned to survey damages at flood-hit sites across the country in a bid to map out detailed renovation plans.

The ministry is considering moving a provincial office of the Fine Arts Department in Prachin Buri to another location in Chon Buri due to persistent flooding.
