Anti-Govt Protests: Police Reinforce Suvarnabhumi Airport

BANGKOK: -- Riot police have been dispatched to maintain order at Bangkok′s main international airport amidst the fears that the ongoing anti-government protests might escalate.

115 officers, drawn from the crowd control unit of Uttaradit province, are now stationed at Suvarnabhumi Airport in order to "assure the foreign visitors of their safety," said Pol.Col. Montri Chinda. The order came direction from the Royal Thai Police headquarters, he added.

The officers are supported by two vans carrying supply and riot gears, such as shields and truncheons.

Pol.Col. Montri also told our correspondent that two more police companies in Uttaradit are at "stand-by" to reinforce the riot police in Bangkok should the protests at Government House get out of hand.

In 2008, the People′s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) led the protesters to occupy both of Bangkok′s airports as part of their campaign to force the government at the time to resign. The government of then-Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat eventually collapsed after the court ordered the disbandment of his political party.

The issue isn't the minor problem with protestors. Thaksin knows he has pushed it too far and fears that things gonna escalate.

I pray for a peaceful resolution to this, and for the safety of protesters and security forces alike. Thais should not fight Thais. Thais should throw out all the corrupt leaders, in elections, and start over with a new progressive Thai party which protects sovereignty and the rights of ALL Thai people regardless of what colour shirts they wear or what social class they belong to.

Some countries need revolutions to get rid of bad leaders others can do it easier. No matter which way it should be done without harming people.

Is this really about anti-government protests or a security feature to stop all those bent on suicide from getting into the airport and ruining reputations ?

They obviously know they are guilty as sin, The Yingluck administration has been such a farce that such measures (occupying airports) might seem par for the course. Elected or not, demanding that a puppet of a convicted criminal resign is perfectly acceptable. And they should be allowed to gather. Not at the airport but in front of government house without intimidation from 12,000 police. Complete overkill, what are Peua Thai neurotic about.

Lampang and Nan send riot police to help keep order during Bangkok protest

LAMPANG, 10 October 2013 (NNT) – The commanders of Lampang and Nan police on Wednesday dispatched riot police from the provinces to Bangkok to help ensure order during the scheduled demonstration by an anti-government group between October 9-17.

188 policemen were dispatched from Nan province. They were armed with full anti-riot gear, and equipped with provisions meant to last at least 7 days. The riot policemen will reinforce Bangkok police officers in keeping order around the Government House until the 17 of October.

In Lampang province, 170 riot policemen were dispatched with similar gears but with additional vehicles such as vans and prisoner transporting vehicles.

While most of the policemen will be on duty in the 3 districts surround Government House, some will be assigned to ensure order at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

I also suspect if there were full English language reporting of all of the street crimes in Thailand, we might find that it's getting to be similar to that of those Western places you name. Just because you don't see something, doesn't mean it's not there.

In which context? Is living in rural Essex County, outside Frankfurt or rural Idaho safer than living in the slums of Bangkok? Is a Thai safer living in either places or a non-Thai in the same locations? Is your money or real assets "Safer" in the LOS or outside? What about driving and flying? Safer or not?

Generalized statements are vague and not easily supported. However, it does make for interesting debate.
