Failing Businesses

I just remembered another one. Phuket airlines Posted Image

Spectacular failure. They had a flight out to Europe somewhere (London ?). Did not pay their landing fees and aircraft impounded. I remember they were banned from most European countries due to safety issues.

Is Happy Air still flying to Phuket? I considered flying to Ranong once to do a Visa Run. Because I love the Andaman Club Casino but hate doing the 6 hour drive to get there

Safari nightclub was another one I really liked. I used to go to bed early and set my alarm at 230am and head down there fresh. Easy pickings when your relatively sober. There was another nightclub called buzz or something similar next door.

You are revealing how long you really have been here Ivan. For many years one of Patong's hottest and successful night clubs. The owner tried to take on Mayor Pian in local mayoral elections and that was the end of his successful business. Buzz is now a shooting range, and Safari is mostly demolished.

The current deputy mayor ( one of the acting mayors now that Pian is out) Chairat, was the owner of Safari. I remember an English bloke (kid) that worked for him saying he was so powerful he could close down the airport. Then two weeks later this English lad asked me for a 20K loan and then I said, why not ask your boss?

I thought the owner was now the deputy mayor. Like Frank & others this thread is bringing back some old memories. I used to go sober to Soi Sunset when they had all the open air bars where Taipan is now. The place seemed like a veritable madhouse. The bars up the back near the Expat always seemed destined to fail. The go go bar in between had the best toilets at the time & one night someone fired a gun from outside into the crowded bar but did not hit anyone.

There is a place on the bypass road that has gone through some expensive refits, all of which failed, including a branch of an overseas chain store but cannot remember the name.

Well how about this one for showing my age..the nightclub at the end of Soi Crocodile before it burnt down. (Im sure it was called crocodile disco) was another one of my favourite haunts ;). cant really blame a fire for failure though.

Australian Airlines was another spectacular failure that was reliant mainly on its Phuket business. It was a shame. It would be good to see more direct flights from Australia to Phuket. The Singapore KL stopovers suck

What about Phuket Muay Thai on the hill going to Kata? The purple sign there got replaced some time ago. And every time I have looked in there it looks barren. That had some half decent condos and allright facilities. I think lack of marketing and more competition may have contributed to its lack of success. I remember it was quite popular 5 or 6 years ago

There's a lot con men here.

They bring over divorced, reasonably wealthy, lonely, middle aged "friends" for their first time.

They set them up with good times and pretty girls.

Of course, it's all affordable to them, and so is the BS "investment" they are talked into and "sold." whilst they are infactuated with Phuket/Thailand and their new girl, half their age.

The local con man inflates all figures in relation to this "business" that will be like a great little "project" for the newly in love, first time to Thailand, western guy.

The business falls over - all sorts of BS is blamed for it, but ultimately, the con man has taken his share out of the whole scam.

Nothing new - it's been going on for years.

The Andaman Hospital at the southern end of Patong. It was only open for a month.

The building lay empty for ages until some bright spark turned it into a Haunted House. That closed very quickly and is now a rather strange looking Italian restaurant (De Marios?).

Wow - must be before my time. Never knew that place was a hospital. I do remember it looked derelict before it became the Haunted House. Yet another spectacular failure, lasted about a year. Mostly demolished, De Mario's now in the entrance area.

Eden Divers!! LMFAO What a joke that company was

Jimmys lighthouse has had more re-runs than MASH

Freedom bar went from Hero to Zero overnight

Valhalla in Patong was another one, I really liked that place. Its a shame it went bust

Irish I don't understand.." Freedom Hero Zero" while you speak of so many other, older places. I remember very well an old topic about this "Pitbull killing guy" in the old old Freedom bar and you had no clue whatsoever of who Charlie was???

It looked like those bars behind Chomlay in Rawaii were getting pulled down this morning.

I just thought of another two which are so glaringly obvious that I think they are an accepted landmarks now.

1)The yacht club at Chalong. Now that is an eyesore. Whats the story behind that?

2)The Villas outside the front of central

A friend of mine that owned a few hotels in Karon opened that up. He said the Muay Thai camp made more than his hotels. Subsequently he got very ill and spent many millions getting healty again, so I don't know what happened to that, but it appears he sold it.

Read through that pal, no where did I state I didnt know him, but I respect the mans privacy. No matter what he did for a living. You on the otherhand make it public knowledge. I wonder how he or Jnr feels about this?

While we are on the subject of bars anyway, I noticed Nancy bar closed down not long ago. I don't know what ever happened to Nancy, but she wasn't a bad Katoey. Good for a laugh and would never rob you.

The Irish pub in Phuket Town. O Malleys (I think) was always a good laugh. I think that has closed down but I havent checked it out for a long time....and what about this old favorite boys and girls? Who remembers Jammin in Phuket Town?? That was good fun in its day

Just on the subject of Muy Thai. I live fairly close to where the Tiger Muy Tai place is (I call it Muy Thai Lane). From being a year or so ago a fairly low key road that connects Chaofa West and East, it's blossomed into a almost resort area in itself. I think there are three gyms, but the accommodation facilities, food outlets, everything essentially to service a short term expat is there. I drive there every morning around 7.15, and lots of expats exercising, Thais starting to work etc, and it's probably the most active place in Chalong if not southern Phuket.

Come on Hans. It's not a theory. How many fools have you spoken to who here who have said, proudly, "I'm partners in a bar here." :):) Or, "My bar is for sale. I'm only selling because we are moving up to Issan to be with her family." :)

It's the same BS, over and over. I've asked, playing along. I quickly sort out who I wouldn't p*ss on here.

For the record, once again, I'm single, by choice, never had a Thai gf/wife, never bought a bar/property here, never sent money for sick buffalo - have been the victim of the odd tuk-tuk driver in the past, or the bar bill added to a little, but nothing more than a loss of a couple of hundred baht here. Never anything to consider a balcony dive.

Seriously, why do you think someone who has seen "a number": done on so many others, and have learnt form their experiences, must have had a number done on them, as you suggest?

To put your "theory" in context - at this very moment, who do you think is more at a chance of loss, of even 1 baht, me, or you???? :)

After I smartened up, I had implemented similar tactics.

I had some good times at Safari, but even better times once I got home from there. wink.png

We are going off topic but...

I never took you for the lonely sex pest.

Never had a Thai gf or wife and single by choice only equates to two things.

Gay or bar pest.

Why are you so deluded about Phuket and the people but remain?

Definately not lonely, but always a pest. :) :)

Why do you think I remain? As stated before - living the tourist life, but I'm an expat, and in Patong.

Does it get an better? :)

That said, Phuket could be managed a lot better, as we all know.

I have no business interests here, but for those that do, I think they should be concerned - and that is on topic.

I know it. The whole area needs to be levelled including Valhalla and make it a big carpark. It will make more money. Those businesses have no chance of surviving. The expat bar is an allright joint though.

Yes, it did just disappear quite unexpectedly. I suppose the rent cost for that prominent spot just did not justify the income from take away burgers.

The land was owned by the Welsh owner Vince's wife's family so he didn't pay rent. But as soon as he had a problem with the wife that was it! Disappeared and hasn't been seen for years.

The original NASA Burger was on Patak Road opposite Karma Lounge, When he set up the new location he sold to Barry who changed the name to Bling's Burgers for some unknown reason. He then converted it to the Banana Sports Bar and it's now an empty Thai restaurant.

Add to the list of failing businesses just about every bar and restaurant on Thaina Road, Kata, with a couple of honourable exceptions, such as Dukes. I've been told Roberts has closed. Can anyone confirm this?

You forgot to mention that Barry had an internet cafe there before it was the Bananna Sports Bar. Vince was subletting to Barry and making a tidy lottle profit until Barry found out who the real owner was. Both good drinking buddies though. Good british louts. Allthough barry definitly had a funnelweb in his pocket when it came to pay the bill at bars

You just reminded me of another business on that road. Remember Medicerrino guest house there? I wonder what happened to those 2 German party animals that owned that?

Can't make it a car park - Soi Sansabai is a "private" Soi - at 20 baht a park. I'm sure someone would get wacked if people could park elsewhere, maybe even for cheaper, let alone, Soi Sansabai wouldn't have motorbikes parked, sometimes 5 deep, along the Soi.

Each individual's little "empire" is important here. :)
