16 countries now warn their citizens on travels to Thailand

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand said today that 16 countries have now warned their people to avoid areas where protests are being held on their travels to Thailand.

However it said that these countries have not yet told their citizens not to travel to Thailand but just advise them to stay away from the areas where protests are held as there was possibility that large scale protest could break out.

The 16 countries are United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Australia, Israel, Brazil, Singapore, Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, Germany, and Hungary.

According to UPI website, it quoted a statement from the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the United Kingdom as saying that the protest in Thailand since early this month tended to intensify and turn into violence.

Meanwhile New Zealand also retained warning to its citizens issued end of September saying the protest in Thailand could spread and turn violent, It advised its citizens to avoid any involvement in the protest or stay close to areas where protests are held.

Hong Kong also retained its yellow warning to its citizens signaling possibility of danger for travel to Thailand. It advised its citizens to monitor the situation in Thailand closely before their travels, and to keep away from areas where protests are held.

Few people from Western countries take notice of those advisories. They read/watch the news and make up their own minds.

Exactly, if you have a tour booked as a normal tourist or a P4P you just get out of bkk asap and go enjoy the rest that AMAZING Thailand has to offer.

Over charging, scams , assault, safe transport system etc etc w00t.gif

Most would not have insurance to cancel flights hotels etc and if you have saved up for a year??? would you cancel.

Sensationalism. Of course any tourist in any country whether be the uk, France, USA or thailand should avoid areas where there are political protests

Who cares, all they need is China, India & Russia.

''but just advise them to stay away from the areas where protests are held as there was possibility that large scale protest could break out.''

Yes indeed. People be warned....

These protests bring a lot of people together in the same place...

Lots of body heat there in addition to the hot weather....darn it.

Difficult already to try to keep the beer cold...

Stay home...

And to say that my home country is part of that... Well. beer easily keeps very cold in my country....whistling.gif

Yup, and Chinese tourists down by 51% and the Russians threatening a boycot through their 5000 travel agencies.

The notice is for 2 different reasons.

1 it let's the Thai's know that Governments are starting to get concerned to the point that this is the first step towards recommending cancelling tours and flights. For people in Canada for instance it usually tells someone thinking of booking to be careful and not put to much money out until either their dates come up or the notice changes.

2. The second and most important is that as i have said before no one can say that they were not warned if something happens to them.

Quick quick: make VISA available for free again !!! I need one in 15 days ...;-)

This is great news for tourists...

They can enjoy a holiday elsewhere without getting a beating, conned for thousands of dollars or have your child stolen... thumbsup.gif

Good advice for tourists.....stay well away. For those of us 'embedded' here...perhaps..'stay away, sit tight but carry-on as normal where possible' because we have seen it all before.

If you stay out of a small part of Bangkok Thailand is not more dangerous than normal.

I would worry more about the road safety, robbers and scammers in the tourist areas than our regular BKK gatherings of different shirt colors ;-)

Could break out? 150,000 people is just a minor bit of parading around the streets then? Just having a street party for a laugh are they?

I think people should review the terms and conditions of any travel insurance. Often it has clauses re: official warnings potentially indemnifying the insurer.

I recall several threads/posts on this from the many similar incidents in the past.

i have to go to british embassy tomorrow, is it ok there?

Yo ... When the yellows closed the international airport - they still came. When the yellows occupied the Government House, they still came. When the reds burned Central World and Zen - they still came. Thailand is not Rwanda.

"16 countries NOW"? It was already 16 countries warning their citizens not to travel, since over a week ago now...

Look out the sky is falling . Time to have a quite glass of red wine and watch the loverly sunset in Sriracha

Im surprised that Canada is on the list and not USA... But the advisory should also warn tourists not to wear the color red. Could end up bad for Chinese tourists if caught up in a crowd.

let me guess. Did the tourist sector already apply for government support, with the hotel owners in Phuket and the south first?

No way you can stop the UK from Coming here~~~Especially to Pattaya

Isn't it a good time to rent a condo in BKK? Or one should rather wait for the 1st blood?

You want to go someplace that is dangerous, go to a big city in the US.
