Radar Trap

Recommended Posts

Hi,

two days ago coming from Bangkok I got stopped at the first toll station on the motorway for speeding.

Long queue-up as almost everybody got stopped and I asked for evidence. They could send me a picture by MMS or e-mail they aid. I opted for the e-mail option, and yesterday I received a picture from my car:

I replied that mail with:

Dear Sir,

I have well taken notice of the nice picture of my car.

Unfortunately I cannot see any evidence for speeding, as this is just a normal picture that can be taken with any camera.

Pictures from speed cameras usually have the date, time and speed copied in the picture. Further, it is not clear who the driver of the car is.

I am happy to pay the fine if you can provide evidence.

With best regards

...will keep you updated... :o

The pitch of your car suggests that you were breaking fast just as the photo was taken. And the sign says something about works in progress ahead. Of course you are guilty...you are a farang. Hey, keep that 500 bhat bill attached to your driver's license.

Of course, I am just joking.

Keep us updated with you progress.

If you drove one of these you would not get a ticket.

All the best.

We got stopped with a full of goodies truck, outside the Regents School in Pattaya for going too slow in the outside lane. When we pointed out the fact that we were taking the Rayong fork, so had to be in that lane, he eyed up the perishables in the back and asked us to report to CHONBURI police station. We gave him a couple of hundred baht, and it didn't seem to matter any more.

If you have a friend visiting the USA get him/her to pick up a radar detector.

Costs about $100 but can soon pay for itself....... :o

That would take 25 speeding checks by my calculations...!

Beware all ye who venture to Chonburi via Sri Racha...here be dragons!!!!...there usually be a speed check opposite ye olde Highway police station....well it saveth them as they drivest not anywhere....

They seem to have equiped themselves recently with a couple of radars and are practicing around Pattaya and Chonburi....be careful coming off the flyover into Pattaya....

For those of you who don't realise it, the speed limit in Thailand is 90kmph, except when stated otherwise.

Be honest now. Were you speeding?

Be honest now. Were you speeding?

I will not comment on a pending case... :o

Update:

As I haven't heard back from the BiB (as expected....) the secretary called this morning and asked to either provide evidence or send the driving license back to me. They will now send me a print of the picture that also shows the speed and other details.

..to be continued...

Maybe they're just working on the principle that if you were on the highway in anything other than a truck, you were going more than 90km just to keep up with the traffic flow :o

Got the print out by mail today. Apparently they use a Micro Digi-Cam and the pic looks pretty much like the one on this brochure:

http://www.lasertech.com/MicroDigiCamwCompact.pdf

Just wonder why the data and the cross hair were not on the pic they sent by e-mail earlier. Anyways, looks like genuine and convicted :o

So guys, watch out at the new airport outbound, the trap was located between km 11 and 12. :D

This looks like another scam by the highway police. I would contact the office of the onsboseman. This office handles complaints for the government from foreignors as well as Thais.

Barry

The onsboseman? You probably mean the ombudsman, right?

And how are these speed cameras calibrated? Who calibrates them? How often are they calibrated?

These questions have recently been asked in Australia...the result? Lots of people being exhonorated from speeding fines.

I would suggest asking the same questions to the relevant Thai authority.

I was actually thinking about that. There are two possible outcomes:

1) Calibration has been done and everything is properly documented. Result: You pay the fine, lawyer etc.

2) There was no calibration, so they make up some certificates and chances are higher than not that the judge will find that sufficient. Result: see above...

Ive been busted twice.

Once in Chumporn province, and the other on Rama 2 road approaching Bangkok at the weigh station. They had a very comfy booth all set up to \pay the fines, and issued me with reciept and some free stickers telling me to 'arrive alive' albeit in Thai.

What are the chances of free stickers when you get busted back home eh!!

Needledd to sy, i heeded their warning. You never see me above 60km/h now. I bout myself a tuk tuk to get around in.....

I don't think it's radar at all? They stop you at motorway toll booths. They know how many kilometers in between toll booths. They take a picture of every car, with the time, then they check when they arrive at the next toll booth.

It's not that hard!

maybe thats how they do it on motorways with toll booths , but on regular highways they do have radar and now they have these automatic radar cameras.

a week or so after driving from bkk to phetchburi , an acquaintance received a penalty notice along with a photo with the time and speed etc. on it.

once the police see how easy it is to generate substantial income with these things , expect to see them sprouting up like mushrooms.

just like in the uk.

they are money printing machines , and the police dont even have to get off their <deleted>.
