Motor Show ends with Toyota recording highest car orders

Thailand International Motor Expo ended yesterday with Toyota recording the highest car orders of more than 9,000 units from a total of 41,083 orders for all brands throughout the 12-day auto show at Impact Muang Thong Thani.

Organizing committee chairman Kwanchai Paphatphong said although the motor show was held at the time of political unrest, respond by the people was still satisfactory with a total of 1,367,357 attendees or a 14.5% decline from the targeted 1.6 million attendees.

He said car orders reached a total of 41,083 units throughout the 12-day long period with Toyota topping the orders for a total of 9,075 units, followed by Honda 6,099, Nissan 4,007, Isuzu 3,753, and Mitsubishi 3,689.

Luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz also recorded 1,227 orders, followed by BMW 763.

He said that of the total car orders, sedans have the largest share of 51.4%, while sport utility vehicle or SUV 26.8%, pick-up trucks 14.6%, and others 7.2%.

But he noted that what was interesting was the averaged price of car orders is higher at 1,046,457 baht from last years 800,000 baht as demand for eco cars declined after the end of the governments first car buyer scheme, and buyers turning to buy medium size and SUV cars instead.

I think what is more interesting is that pick-ups have fallen to just 14.6%

Maybe because last year pick-up buyers could also profit from the first car buyer scheme.

They might sell more second hand cars if they didn't price them just about as high as new cars.

Two years ago, there were two and three year old Yaras selling for as much as a new one. We ended up getting a new Mazda for 200,000 baht less than a second hand Yara cost.

They were able to price them that high as Thai people were buying it at that cost...that might start to change soon.
