Beware driving North from BKK during New Year

Featured Replies

I've seen terrible traffic on Route 2 before, but today I drove back from Swampy, it was the worst I've ever seen. 9 was terrible, 2 hours from Suvarnaphumi to Bang Pa In. Then it just went from bad to worse. The section coming out of Saraburi up the hill past the cement factory was particularly nasty. The cops are in places utilizing the southbound lanes for northbound traffic, not very effectively. The bottom line my usual 4.5 hour drive ended up taking 11 hours.

Currently kicking my sore ass for not flying down in the first place

Feel sorry for you GinBoy.....but thanks very much for the info.

All the Isan employees headed home for the holiday. BKK traffic is nice for a few days.

Just went up to Mahasarakham from BKK yesterday, it took 4 and a half hours. The roads were clear but there were huge traffic jams in the opposite direction, most of them caused by accidents. Not looking forward to driving back to BKK.

Sure, on New Years day all traffic goes back south.

Should be calming down today.

The ever recurring cycle.

Worst around Songkran and New Year.

Pretty bad also around Asanha Bucha.

This year a long weekend from July 11 (northbound) to 14 (southbound),

Avoid these days.

I have a one year calendar at the wall, clearly color marking (amongst others) all official holidays (days off) in TH.

You have to watch the news, whether there will another extra free day(s) over New Year 14/15 on short notice.

I had the misfortune to do a 200 km car trip on Sat. Thai driving skills have deteriorated even further,I wouldn't have believed it was possible
