webfact
Bangkok closes 146 schools in capital on January 13BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will close all its 146 schools in the capital on January 13, the day when the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDEC) announced to shut down Bangkok to pressure the resignation of the caretaker prime minister. The primary and secondary school closure proposal was agreed upon during the meeting of the BMA executives and school directors which are to be affected by the capital shutdown.BMA assistant governor Attaporn Suwatanadecha said at the meeting of the BMA executives and school directors, over 80% of participants agreed to close the schools on January 15.However he made clear that the one-day closure has nothing to do with the safety of students but because of inconvenient traffic as many schools are located near and at the protest sites. He said that the PDRC has assured that the protests at various significant places of the capital would be peaceful and therefore it was not the reason to close but mainly affected traffic. He said schools to be closed comprising 41 in Central Bangkok, 59 in Bangkok South, and 46 in Bangkok North. But he said that school directors have authority to order further closure if they considered the situation turns unsafeHe added the closure proposal would be concluded again today by the Bangkok governor and school directors.Full story: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/bangkok-closes-146-schools-capital-january-13/ -- Thai PBS 2014-01-

tonytigerbkk
I’m confused with this story. The headline is about schools closing on 13th January but in the third paragraph 15th January is mentioned. Is this one day closure on 13th January or 15th January?
Mampara
So much for "education" in this country! Whats the difference anyway! there has never been an adequate education system in Thailand as a whole. The so called schools are just entertainment centers and places to keep the kids out of mischief while the parents are working their B*ts off trying to keep up with the Jones'es, with teachers acting like clowns in a circus tent desperately trying to keep their popularity. And u wonder why the kids don't respect u as they would a Thai teacher! what a bunch of losers that would never make the grade in any other western country.

siampolee
Frank James post # 7 This is a de facto endorsement of the criminal shutdown. Bad move. You really are making an inane comment In 2010 our school was in the middle of a Red Shirt enclave in Klong Toey and students were threatened and afraid the school was subsequently closed for some 7 days.,The local 7-11's were looted as well as other shops and the electricity maintenance department was torched too. You have children, are you willing to expose them to a possible violent incident perpetrated by people of assorted political beliefs and assorted uniforms? Your comments remind me of Thaksin asking for the wives and children of the Red Shirts to ''man the barricades.''Yet then we saw in the press a smiling Thaksin his then wife and their children happily shopping safely in a Hong Kong shopping mall. t
diehard60
So it is OK for suthep to do this and get the schools closed? Knowing that children have to learn. I am sure that they will add on an extra school dya at the end of the year. Right????????
Boxclever
So the Yellow Shirts are only going to close down Bkk for one day? I thought the city closure was going to start on 13th and go on until they get what they want. Can someone clarify this please?

Thai at Heart
God knows how this country would handle the blitz. Oh I forgot they, surrendered in a few days. How about someone in the BMA standing up and stating, business as usual????
Smokemachine
Since they know many including students are coming out to protest too. Why not just close it.
