BMA denies supporting demonstrators

BANGKOK, 13 January 2014 (NNT) — The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has denied being involved in or supporting the ongoing demonstrations.

BMA spokesperson Treedao Apaiwong gave an explanation regarding a video clip that depicted a BMA truck entering the protest area at Pathumwan intersection. She stated that the truck was merely bringing in more steel barricades to cordon off the Bangkok Art and Culture Center to prevent any damage to the building.

Ms. Treedao further stated that the BMA is obligated to maintain peace and order within the capital and will provide any needed assistance to alleviate the effects of the ongoing protests, such as providing mobile toilets, light fixtures, collecting trash, and overall cleanliness maintenance.

As the BMA would have to coordinate with the protesters to make way for an emergency passage for medics or firefighters to enter the area in case of an emergency, Ms. Treedao pointed out that it is no surprise then that one would see BMA vehicles roaming about within the demonstration areas.

Thai stock drops 11.24 points as the BKK rally begins

BANGKOK, 13 Jan 2014 (NNT) - The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index drops 11.24 points this morning as the People's Democratic Reform Committee's mass rally started taking over the capital, coupled with the fact that the Student and People Network for Thailand's Reform (NSPRT) has threatened to seize the SET if Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra refuses to step down by Wednesday.

According to the Krungsri Securities Public Company Limited, the local stock market opened with a fluctuation in the negative zone at 1,244.21 points, a decrease by 11.24 points. However it bounced back and forth by trading within the construction, power and bank groups.

The company's director of the Stock Analysis Division, Thanadej Rangsrithananond, indicated that the political upheaval is the biggest influence to this morning's stock index activities. He explained that at the moment investors are keeping a close watch on whether or not the PDRC's rally would turn violent while analyzing its possible effects on the local economy.

Earlier the NSPRT vowed to seize the SET should Prime Minister Yingluck refuses to step down within 2 days.
