Just wondered how much it would cost roughly (in fuel) to drive from CM to BKK in a large Vigo. I'm guessing it will take about 8 hours.

Wondering whether to fly down to BKK (family of 4 of us) or hire a car and take a road trip. We'd be hiring a car from BKK anyhow so just an option and then we could stop off somewhere overnight. We're heading onto Hua Hin eventually.

Any recommendations of places of interest to stay between CM and BKK would be much appreciated (toddler and 7 yr old)

About 2,000 baht. Sukothai is alright and about halfway. If you take the Chainat/Suphanburi route you can bypass Bkk completely. HH is then another two/three hours.

I have a petrol VIgo and I would have to say a little more than 2000. More like 2500. You can chew up quite a bit of fuel once you hit traffic there.

Not too much to see in Sukhothai but it's a useful stopover point, figure three and a half hours after leaving Chiang Mai - the Pai Lin hotel (sp) is large and fairly inexpensive but very dated and drab, the Heritage Hotel near the airport (owned by Bangkok Airways) is excellent, book on Agoda for discounts, well worth it.

I like Nakorn Sawan as a stopover. Far enough from CM to make it worth stopping and close enough to BKK to make it an easy drive in the next day so that you do not have peak hour traffick.

Here we go again. Whenever these threads pop up it seems some people use rockets to get down to bangkok based on how quickly they seem to get there.

There's just no way you're going to get to hua hin in nine hours, not in a car anyway. That's nonstop at 100kph all the way.

My personal favourite for stopping between bkk and cmai is kamphaeng phet. A really nice provinicial town experience, and the ping river too. A very nice place for walking around.

If you stop at sukothai then you have all the old ruins to see. But nearby and out of the town is sri satchanalai which is similar to the ruins in sukothai but much less crowded, bigger, and a very beautiful place to go.

You could always drive a bit further on the first day and stop at lopburi, the monkey town. Your 7yo is lkely to have a ball! Then you have less of a journey the next day onto hua hin.

Your kidding right Kamphaeng phet that's barely 4 hours from Chiang mai. Its 900k from HH to Chiang Mai go to kanchaniburi spend the night there see the bridge the next day and then an easy drive to HH.
