EC says over 2 million voters registered for advance polls

advance-poll-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The Election Commission (EC) says more than two million voters have registered for the advance polls scheduled to be held on Sunday.

EC secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong said that of the over two million registered voters, 40,000 have chosen to vote in the provincial areas, while the rest will vote outside the provincial areas.

There are altogether 153 central polling stations outside the provinces.

He said the much watchful area is in Bangkapi area in Bangkok where more than 80,000 voters have registered for advance polls. Other areas which will be closely watched are Bang Khunthien, and where industrial estates are housed such as Ayutthaya, Chonburi and Samut Prakarn.

He said more than 100,000 voters in these areas have registered for advance polls.

The EC secretary-general also said that of the 77 provinces where elections are to be held on January 26, election offices in 20 provinces have been encircled and shut down by protesters.

The advance polls on January 26 will be a test if the February 2 general election can be held or not, he said.

He predicted encirclement of election offices by protesters on Sunday which may disrupt polling by voters, but said election officials have been advised how to cope with such situation.

Earlier the People’s Democratic Reform Committee vowed to shut down all election offices to disrupt the advance polls.

Bhum Jai Thai calls for election postponement

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Bhum Jai Thai party candidates Friday issued a statement to call on the government to defer the February 2 election until the situation has become peaceful.

The candidates, including Sopon Sarum, Bongjong Wongtrairat and Prachak Klaewkla, held a press conference to call for the election postponement.

Sopon told the press conference that his party had a stand to contest the election once the House was dissolved but his party did not want to see the election held amid severe rifts. He said the Bhum Jai Thai saw that there should be rules accepted by all sides before the election would be held.

Sopon said even the Office of the Auditor General also wanted the election to be delayed.

He said the situation worsened after the government declared the state of emergency, which also affected election campaigns.

Sopon said Bhum Jai Thai candidates would stop election campaigns from now to affirm the party's stand.

Sopon said he had informed Bhum Jai Thai leader Anutin Charnweerakul before his party candidates decided to make a joint statement.

"We will not obstruct the election but we want to have it postponed," Sopon said.

"We want the government to set rules that are acceptable to all sides first. We would like to call on politicians to step back. They will just return to power late. If politicians step back, the country will be peaceful and the people will return homes and the election will be held."

Boonjong said the election would not bode well for the country at all.

He said even the Election Commission would like to postpone the poll on several reasons.

Govt will try to re-open some protest occupied areas

BANGKOK, 24 January 2014 (NNT) - The Center for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) has vowed to bring peace back to Bangkok and confirmed it will not crack down on the anti-government protesters. The center will however negotiate with them to take back some of the areas currently occupied by the protesters.

Deputy government spokesperson Sunisa Lertphakhawat said the CMPO, headed by Labor Minister Chalerm Yubamrung and national police chief Pol.Gen. Adul Saengsingkaew, used officers from all units and laws to deal with the protesters. The center requested top leader of the anti-government protests Suthep Thaugsuban to return the occupied areas and promised to use talks as the main approach.

The spokesperson also denied the government’s involvement in the closure of a mosque in Trang province by the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and urged the PDRC to issue official apologies to the Chief of the Muslim in Thailand.

PCAD Will Not Disrupt Election, Spokesman Insists

By Khaosod English.

BANGKOK: -- The leaders of the anti-government protest movements will not disrupt the upcoming election, a spokesman has insisted.

Mr. Ekkanat Prompan, spokesman of the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), said that the despite the group′s opposition to the 2 February election, PCAD leaders have decided to let the election take place.

"We will not impede the advance-voting on 26 January and the actual election on 2 February," Mr. Ekkanat said.

His remark contradicted PCAD leader Suthep Thaugsuban who told the protesters yesterday that PCAD will employ every available means to disrupt the 2 February election. Mr. Suthep has previously demanded that an unelected "People′s Council" be established to implement "reforms" of Thai political system before any election can be held.

"I do not know the reason why he changed his mind," Mr. Ekkanat told reporters.

However, he said PCAD will still organise rallies and demonstrations on election days to stress their "reform before election" stance.

Mr. Ekkanat also hinted that individual protesters might stage activities to voice their opposition to the election on their own accord.

"We won′t prevent them from doing so, because it is their rights to express their beliefs," Mr. Ekkanat said, "But we will request that they stick to peaceful and non-violence principles".
