Elephant trampling suspected in American woman's death in Thailand
By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

BANGKOK: -- The body of an American woman missing in Thailand for five days was found in a nature reserve, where she was apparently trampled to death by elephants, police said Thursday.

Seventy people had been searching for the victim, who was identified by the State Department as Lily Glidden. She was found Jan. 18 in the Kaeng Krachan National Park.

"Her arms, her wrists and other parts of the body were broken, so we assumed she was trampled by elephants because no humans could have caused such powerful damage to the body," police Col. Woradet Suanklaai told the Associated Press.

An autopsy will determine the official cause of death.

"Looking at the pictures she took in her camera, we see a lot of animals, birds, snakes, lizards," Woradet told the AP.

"We assumed she wanted to take pictures of elephants because that's what the Kaeng Krachan National Park is famous for. We believed she wanted to find them and take some photos." [read more...]

Any pictures of elephants?

Or maybe a picture of somebody pointing at an elephant?

RIP & I hope a proper investigation is done so the family are not wondering and speculating.

I find it disturbing that the local media have not covered this and it leaks out a week later. Could this effect the mighty tourist dollar in some perceived way ?

There is a picture on facebook of her handling a cobra in Hong Kong. I don't think it's appropriate to post her photos here.

RIP Lily

RIP. What a scary and awful way to go. Condolences to her family.

Sometimes you may forget that these animals are wild and can be deadly. I hope this incident at least will serve as a warning to others to be more careful when trekking in the jungle.

I remember a few years ago, a Thai guy was killed by elephants in Kaeng Krajan very close to the lower campsite. In that case he ignored ranger's advice to keep clear of the elephants.

Elephants are the most dangerous animals in any Thai forest. Snakes and tigers will avoid humans if possible.
