Troubled Hungarian living on streets in Phuket Town

PHUKET: -- Hungarian Farkas Gyula – who was found wandering in Kamala on January 11, apparently at a complete loss, and was “rescued” by Tourist Police – has now turned up barefoot on a street in Phuket Town.

When he was found in Kamala, it was believed that Mr Gyula might be suffering from Alzheimer’s, so he was put into the Sunpalm Kamala Beach hotel and his family were eventually contacted and arranged a flight for him to return to Switzerland, where they live, next Tuesday (February 4).

But Mr Gyula did not stay put. This morning Jintana Choobua, receptionist at the Sunpalm, said, “He paid his bill and checked out on January 15.”

Last night The Phuket News came across Mr Gyula, sitting on the pavement outside Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Failing to get cogent answers from him, and noting that he could not walk because of damage to his feet and badly swollen ankles, The News called the tourist police.

Pol Sen Sgt Maj Wichit Pongsapung said, “He does seem to be distracted. Anyway, he will be sent back home on February 4. We [Tourist Police] have already contacted the Hungarian consulate in order to assist him, and to inform his family.

“He likes to get food at Vachira Hospital,” he added.

Wiwat Kanjanapanit, a security guard at the hospital, told The Phuket News, “I have encountered him on many occasions in the past 10 days or so. He is not a patient here.

“I heard the motorcycle taxi drivers saying that he walks back and forth between the Tourist Police station and Vachira Hospital. Each morning, they say, he walks to the hospital, and then each evening he walks back to the police station and spends the night there. That’s all I know.”

Pol Maj Urumporn Koondejsumrit, Tourist Police inspector, told The Phuket News this morning, “The consulate has informed us that they have the ticket for him to go back home on February 4.”

Have a nice trip back home, mate.

The man is quite obviously confused and suffering. The safest place for him is with family. What is funny?

They "believed he may be suffering from Alzheimers" and put him in a hotel ???????????

The poor guy needs to be evaluated and treated medically, if that has not been done already.

How is this guy ever going to be able to or allowed to board an Aircraft in his confused state ?????????

No Airline will accept him as a passanger in that state even if accompanied by a family mmber or other person.

He has to be "Cleared Medically to Fly" and approved by the Chief Medical Officer of the Airline he will be flying on.

Another obvious case of "kicking the can down th road" by both Thai authorities, his Embassy, and his family

Not sure about his family and if they understand his siutation. But he clearly should not be left on his own. A sad story.

Sorry whats so funny about this mans tragedy?

At 66 Costas2008 had better hope he does not have any decline in his health that depends on the generosity of others. I am NOT AT ALL superstitious but I have to admit that Thailand does seem to hand it back as good as it gets it. Costas2008 better hope that my observations are just a limited data-set rather than conclusive analysis of this effect!

If you put yourself in this man's mind for just a minute it is a VERY scary situation. He appears to be holding onto the only reality he can grasp and is surviving on the good nature of fellow human beings....

Costas2008 is not one of these!

Yes, you certainly did deserve those condemning replies. You post would have been removed, but too late as many replies. And all the replies were valid.

I take it from this you have been sufficiently humbled. Thank you for your honesty. Have a better day.

Poor Fella ... I wonder how he got to Thailand in the first place ....

What's troubling about being sandwiched between two tourist policeman?

Poor boke, the only consolation is he looks to be in reasonably good health and seems happy enough......

Wish him safe travels

Strange looking walking stick he is carrying. Anyway, he looks like he hasn't missed any meals during his illness.

hope he makes it safely to his family soon and been looked after with care and love. We all if alive will be old and who knows what condition we will be.

Well for one thing, most men would not enjoy being sandwiched between two other men, never mind between two policemen...

You are weird.

Is that how you treat people suffering from Alzheimer’s in Greece, by laughing at them?
