After landfill fire near coast, toxic contamination not yet found in seafood

SAMUT PRAKAN, 27 March 2014 (NNT) – No toxic or chemical contaminants have been found in seafood sold in Samut Prakan, in the aftermath of the fire at the Phraekkasa landfill.


According to Thipphawan Parinyasiri, director of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Food Control Division, no reports of contamination in seafood have been submitted to the FDA. Nonetheless, the FDA was coordinating with agencies such as the Department of Medical Sciences and the Samut Prakan Public Health office to inspect the quality of seafood being sold at markets and those marked for export.

No contamination has been found in seafood for export either. The FDA will deal with cases of contamination found in food sold domestically in accordance with the Food Act, whereas imported food found to be contaminated will be immediately destroyed and the case sent to the country of origin. Ms. Thiphhawan explained.

BANGKOK, March 27 – The Office of Attorney General (OAG) will consider indicting former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and his deputy, Suthep Thaugsuban, in connection with deaths and injuries of civilians in a crackdown on protesters in the 2010 political upheaval in Bangkok.

THAI blames Emergency Decree for passenger decrease in Feb

BANGKOK, 27 March 2014 (NNT) - National carrier Thai Airways International (THAI) has reported a continued decrease in its passenger and cargo loads in February due to the government’s invocation of the Emergency Decree. The number of Chinese passengers traveling with the airline dropped the most.

Labor Min hopeful of Thailand’s better ranking on human trafficking

Plunge seen in project launches in Bangkok and suburbs

Indonesian man caught with haul of drugs at Chiang Mai Airport

BANGKOK: -- An Indonesian national was caught yesterday at Chiang Mai Airport with 2.8 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine from China. Sunaryi Ayi, 42, was arrested by customs officers, who seized the drug, which is reportedly worth at least Bt2.5 million in street value. The man was travelling from Guangzhou.

Police raid clinic selling unlicensed diet pills

BANGKOK: -- Police raided a clinic in Buri Ram's Muang district yesterday following complaints that the place sold unlicensed diet pills with Sibutramine as a key ingredient. Sibutramine, which is banned in Thailand, is known to cause neurosis and people with heart disease and vascular problems can suffer fatal side effects.

Grenades hit 1st Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment near Chaeng Watttana rally site

BANGKOK: -- Grenade attack has been reported at the 1st Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment near Chaeng Wattana rally site before 11pm Wednesday night.


No injury has been reported.

One of the grenades fell at the regiment's car park and the other one hit a building.

Thai police speed up investigation into killings of 2 Indonesian navy officers

SONGKHLA, 27 March 2014 (NNT) -- The provincial court of Songkhla has issued arrest warrants for 12 crewmen of a Thai fishing boat who are suspected of involvement in the murder of two Indonesian Navy officers, on charges of illegal immigration.


Pol. Lt. Gen. Chakthip Chaichinda, a deputy national police chief, said after his meeting with Indonesian consulate officials in Songkhla that Thai police has extended the fact finding mission to three to five days as there are many information and document to be reviewed, especially the documents to be provided from Indonesia which also need translations.

Meanwhile, the Fishery Association of Songkhla has sent a letter to the Fishery Association of Thailand asking the latter to act as coordinator in the case and in extending compensations to the victims' families

The Songkhla Fishery Association also asked the government to negotiate with Indonesia to open its waters to Thai fishing boats. After the incident, more than 500 Thai trawlers have been kept ashore due to the patrol of several Indonesian battleships.
