Pirates raid oil tanker in Malacca Straits

Armed pirates have raided an oil tanker sailing in the Malacca Straits and abducted three crew members, officials in Malaysia say.

The pirates also pilfered a large amount of diesel from the tanker, which reports say was travelling from Singapore to Myanmar.

Three Indonesian crew members were seized, officials said.

The Malacca Straits, which run between Malaysia and Indonesia, are a key shipping route in the region.

The raid happened early on Tuesday, Noel Choong, head of the International Maritime Bureau's (IMB) piracy reporting centre based in Kuala Lumpur, was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Arm the ships when in international waters.

Agreed and armed deterrence does work...

Exactly. What part of, hostile actions abort or end as soon as a gun arrives, do wimpy liberals find so difficult to comprehend? Police will tell you they respond after the fact and offer no preventative protection against crime. God bless them for the work they do but chasing down a perp that has committed a crime and engaging him in a firefight is not protection for the victims who lay bleeding and dying.

This incident underscores the U.S. government's expanded relations with Indonesia since the Bush administration. The lax security in the Straits is a primary reason. Thailand's juvenile political bickering and their stance on human trafficking is another reason the U.S. is seeking a strategic democratic partner in SE Asia.

It it were only that simple. The ships are not always in international waters, they're often in a port in a foreign country that does not allow armed vessels. There's also the problem with seamen who are not trained for weapons use, nor want to be.

Since you use a broad sweeping generality: Thanks manly macho conservative.

Love the irony of a gun arriving and "hostile" actions aborting. However, I do agree that "appropriately" armed threat or action when it is "actually" needed can be a good thing. Problem is guns are too often "inappropriately" used by when they are not actually needed, by idiots who injury or kill an innocent person(s).
