BANGKOK: -- A man who robbed a Thai Post reporter and slashed his throat was sentenced to 10 years in prison this morning, but his victim said that punishment didn’t fit the crime.

The Criminal Court sentenced Saran Chumin, 24, for beating and robbing Suwat Panchawong for his mobile phone and tablet computer before fleeing with an accomplice by motorbike in March, 2013 on Ratchada Soi 36.

However, the reporter says he will file his own civil complaint against his attackers as he felt their punishment was too light. [read more...]

Nope... they will probably get 5 years and a pardon.... or even less.

He will likely come out an even more dangerous man and will make sure the next time he will not leave the witness alive.

The slasher obviously wasn't a member of a rich family with influence, otherwise I doubt if he would have spent a day in jail.

I agree. I often wonder why they don't make them tourist attractions, all those prisons all around Thailand without any prisoners.

Does this mean he wants a bigger cut?

Be happy it was not only a 500 baht fine...that seems to be the going rate for major crimes these days...

Best laugh I had all day -- and on a pun. +10.

Obviously not, or he wouldn't be stealing mobile phones!

No, he obviously wasn't. In another thread, a rich person ,owner of the ill-fated Santika pub in which 67 people died, has been sentenced to one year in jail for.................tax evasion. Amazing eh?

Yes cases like that show what is wrong in this country. Plus the girl that was driving underage without a license and killing 9 people.. an other shame.

But surely this was his first crime and the punishment should be reduced to 10 days community service and 2 years probation?
