How many times do you ever see the highway patrol cars parked in their police stations? How many times have you ever seen them on the road's catching violators?

II just drove mototrcycle to Amnat the other day... and I had to think this... in the city, there are several check points for helmet violators...

then went on the buzzing, drive as fast as you can or anywhere you want to highways... and most people driving on the sides(or aka Motorcycle lane) without helmets...

Now wondering... in a city, there is less likely to be an accident because the flow of traffic is controlled by itself...maybe a drunk might cause an accident, but far and few between... and yet we read as in this case...most accidents are happening on the highways and expressways... so why are all those policemen checking in town where it is not for safety... and not being where safety is needed... of course we might have a united opinion on this... but in reality... we see these articles constantly and yet the solution is not being presented... (yet we pray for Korea)

just a thought... and of course my opinion.

'so why are all those policemen checking in town where it is not for safety... and not being where safety is needed'

Because critical thinking is not taught in schools!

According to Ch3 news just now the death toll is now 15.

Witness said the truck was overtaking another vehicle at high speed and careered into a ford ranger pick up before hitting the passenger bus and pushing it off the road.

Reckless truck driver - nothing else.

Thailand's roads are among the world's deadliest and accidents are common.

I would have to disagree that the roads are the problem, certainly not the world's deadliest, having driven most areas in Thailand, I would asses that the driving habits of the locals are the problem, which is why accidents are common. I find the roads generally good here but the correct use of the roads is little understood or controlled.

This is fundamentally a problem of Thai attitudes to Probability. A problem therefore about Thai Culture. High traffic fatalities obviously means (to a westerner) that every time we venture out on the roads the probability we be involved in an accident is higher here than in nearly every other country in the world. But a Thai believes in Fate, in good/bad luck, in 'Making Merit', etc etc. They really do not see the connection that we do between high rates of crashes and the strong chance that we will be in one ourselves. We think : 'That could easily happen to me' - they think - 'That will not happen to me' (for various reasons we wouldn't understand).

QUOTE FROM OP:

A recent report by the World Health Organization said Thailand saw 38.1 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2010 -- behind only the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean and the South Pacific island of Niue

A few years ago I visited Niue.

There are about 2.000 people living there.

So the WHO informs us that Niue had 1 road accident with perhaps 1 victim?

In the UK insurance companies understand. But that is probably lost on here.

That road is one of the most dangerous in Thailand.

3 lanes alternate in priority with nothing but 2 yellow lines to designate who has priority.

Given the extreme intelligence that comes with Thainess, it should be obvious why accidents happen so often to peepen in the Kingdom

They are uniquely endowed with the ability to see around blind corners, accelerate downhin faster than uphin, and they have tattoos that plotect them from harm.

2 yellow lines what are they for.Have traveled that road between Tak and Mae Sot and would never try it again.Beautiful scenery but life is worth more than that.It is scary when you are traveling at a safe speed and have a truck behind you and you can't see their bumper bar in the rear vision mirror and I am not a slow driver. Two thai people in the rear seat refused to put seat belts on were being thrown from side to side and asking me to slow down.but we could have ended like this one today if I had done so.

am i driving a truck full of people...if i had a accident ..just imagine how much i would have to pay out..i see a lot of falangs

Oh they take speeding very seriously, recently they installed fixed speed cameras in Phuket, now we know the open road limit is 90, otherwise 80, unless sign posted, well along one main rd, mostly built up areas, where in Oz the speed would be 60 guess what they set the camera trigger speed at....120kph.... absolutely stupid.

The death toll in Thailand is 44 / 100,000 (and that's the ones who die at the scene)

It's my understanding that as well that its only those that die at the scene that are considered to have been killed in an RTA. Dying in hospital from injuries sustained in the crash does not count. Is this correct ?

YES. Got a cousin-in-law who is Senior Sergeant Major with RTP and I asked him about that once. They ONLY count the ones who died at the scene. If you die on the way to the hospital, or in the hospital, your death isn't counted as one of the "dead" from the crash.

Tak Road Witnesses Yet Another Tragic Accident

By Khaosod English

TAK - A hilly slope of the highway in Mueang district of Tak province has claimed yet another traffic accident in which 15 people were killed.

It is the third large-scale road accident that happened on the very same stretch of Tak-Mae Sot Road in the past 5 weeks.

In the latest accident, a 10-wheeler truck has collided into an oncoming converted pick-up truck that was full of passengers at around noon today, police said.

According to the police, the driver of the truck lost control of his vehicle as he descended down the slope of the hill. The truck reportedly crashed into several vehicles, before slammed headlong into the pick-up truck. Nevertheless, the police stress that a thorough investigation is needed to establish a clear cause of the accident.

13 people died at the scene, while two more victims died at hospital, medical workers say, adding that the dead include an official from the Department of Forestry, and the pick-up truck's driver, while the rest was members of the local hill tribes.

The pick-up truck was headed to Mae Lamao district and left the bus station in the city center of Tak province only 40 minutes before the accident, police say.

Suriya Prasatbandit, Govenor of Tak province, said during his inspection at the accident site that he has ordered an investigation into the case, and that he demanded to see the result of the inquiry as soon as possible.

The same downhill slope of Tak-Mae Sot Road is no stranger to accidents. On 24 March, a public bus carrying officials on a field trip sped down into the ravine next to the highway, killing 31 people.

In another incident on 23 April, 16 illegal immigrants were killed when their chartered bus suffered a brake fault and crashed into the side of the road.

As I have said several times here on TV, Thailand is run by people who have the education level of 6th grade children. This is because the majority of the folk, who actually run the country, never went past the 6th grade. It is going to take a couple of generations after the education system here is brought to western standards. In other words, none of us here on TV will ever see it.

TV members are getting conditioned to this type of thing and no longer find themselves surprised, until such time as police enforce strict driving regulations and drivers are made to undergo special driving instruction for heavy vehicles this will keep happening. Actually making any vehicle used to transport people to be inspected yearly and made to be safe would help too, all these "brake" failuires are a joke.

Car accidents happen all over the world, the kill 40,000 annually in the US alone. It is the risk you take when you head out on the road

Ya gotta work as teacher in a Thai school to understand.I had 7 years before I threw in the towel.I just couldn't take anymore.I loved the job and the kids, but the system got the better of me.First time in my life I put my hands up and said "You Win".But I have had the luxury of financial security, and that makes a lot of difference.I could tell them how I felt.It made no difference.

Yeah, but the US is 10.1 per 100,000, while Thailand, with roughly one fifth of the population of the US, is 38.4, second highest in the world. If you're gonna make comparisons, don't compare apples to oranges.

As much as I would love to see it To make a law where they have to sit a test here and get proper instruction would be very difficult. There's thousands out there driving these vehicles and to stop them on the spot and say you can't drive again until!!! not going to happen is it?

This training who would pay for it? The Government? I doubt it...If left to the driver all that would happen is the traffic tea money would go up as most wouldn't have the money and if they did many of them would spend it on booze.

It's not only Thailand. When bus meets mountain road no metter where you go if the driver thinks he's James Bond and makes one mistake it usually results in some poor passenger's deaths/

Within minutes of leaving my home in Udon Thani I can be heading into rural areas even on Highway 2 and shudder every time I'm overtaken by a beat up old pickup loaded to the gun'ales with people. If anything goes wrong ... !

Nothing different down here in the big smoke.About 10 years ago I drove to Don Meung airport ( about a 20 minute drive ). i saw at least 3 shunts and I laughed, why?Easy answer pure an utter stupidity.I do wish the moderators would stop posting this (lost for words now ).This is not news,it is proving Darwins theory about evolution.A topic wasted on here. Before anyone comments, let us know about your experience on Thai roads.I have had a few near misses where it was not my fault and I have learned not to stop, because as a farang you are to blame.

LOS What a disgrace... both Government and police. No one cares. Then again Thai's know better than everyone else in this world. So who are we to criticize. Not quite true because l know of many everyday Thais who agree with my sarcasm, but unfortunately, they have to grin and bear it.

Until Thais learn about responsability and what it means nothing will ever change! This country is very sick and the cure is going to be very long and not at all comfortable and personally I can't see them taking the medicine - just too lazy to bother!
