Customs' rich haul of cars, gold, drugs

BANGKOK: -- The Customs Department has seized luxury cars, gold bars worth Bt6.5 million and date-rape drugs worth Bt42 million in separate raids.

Department chief Rakop Srisupaat said the hauls included a BMW car worth Bt5 million, a Mercedes Benz worth Bt3 million, the gold bars and 703,140 boxes of date rape drugs.

They also found other tax-evading items such as foreign liquor and cigarettes, brand-name bags, beauty drugs and CDs. Altogether the items totalled Bt98 million.

Rakop said the gold was seized from an Indian national at Suvarnabhumi Airport, while the suspect reportedly tried to smuggle it from Brunei to India via Thailand.

The date-rape drugs were uncovered at a customs checkpoint in Tak's Mae Sot |district.

Assume they mean Rohypnol, which is for sleep disorder not designed as a rape drug.

Well, that story left out more than it presented. I guess they didnt want to name the officials that tried to smuggle the cars in. Why even print such a story, if not giving enough facts to figure out what is about. So will the drugs and the cars be destroyed,, or someone will be allowed to get them, once the tax that they "forgot" will be paid. If customs had a car crusher, and used it, there would be less smuggling, and if someone actually did some jail time, there would be even less.

I thought the Date Rape Drug would be for the foreign liquer....

The numbers in this story are so contradictory.

The Thai press wants to sensationalize the "haul" as they put it. There is no professional journalistic approach to checking facts and making the proper investigative report. For example, what does customs do with this "hauled" contraband? What checks and balances are in place to assure that the drugs get destroyed and the cars and gold get turned in to benefit for the Thai people to fix spghatti code electrical wiring all up and down Sukhumvit Road, to buy real editions of school texts instead of making students purchase copied texts as a few examples.

But what is the Thai customs disposition of "hauled" contraband? Do they have a methodology that assures its legitimate liquidation? Does this process benefit the Thai people? What Thai Mr. Bigs were tied to the cars and arrested?

there's a comma between the cars and the gold bars, i.e. the value of the gold bars (~5kg) is THB 6.5 million.

No, there's a comma after "cars". The gold bars are worth THB6.5m. It's not at all ambiguous unless you're just trying your hardest to pick non-existant holes in the story.

a box is about 2inch long 1inch wide and contains 5 pills .

703 boxes becomes 703.ooo boxes after counting without a calculator.

the cars are +10 y old and good for 10's of millions ,lol.

The gold bars from 10 gr are too small to weigh on the scale ,and the 10gr is stamped in it .

Headline does not give value of Cars... It gives value of Gold at: Bt6.5 million, plus Drugs at a value: Bt42 million. All in seperate Raids!!
