Perhaps they also thought 2MB would last 20 years?

Or maybe they thought that nobody would ever need more than 64KB...

Sorry, crappy IT Joke (if you have to explain it, it's not funny) based on something Bill Gates once said about memory in PCs, but there does seem to be a parallel here.

I believe that is an urban legend, but the analogy fits...

01. The abuse from all of you is partly funny, partly tragic. Is this the best you can do?

02. If one can't survive in Thailand with work, FL projects and 2 million Bath in backup, one can wonder how the locals do it. Surely it's then "possible".

03. Neither of you can't use math properly. European stock-market rose 8.3% average during the last 20 years. Inflation 1.5%. Net difference makes for an "interest-based" living 11125B for beginning of year 2, excluding the income for the current work, let's say 20000B/month. So that would make for an average living of about 31000B/month, which I would say is "fair" giving a cheap living standard.

04. One should never compare how other survive or live, coz it can me done in 10 billion different ways. Some people live for the day. Other people try to survive. Either way, it's up to you.

05. If I had 2 million in reserves I would invest them in a living of some kind. Because population growth is faster than allocated global resources, property will always increase in value.

06. If you want love in life, get a woman and a baby. If you want to stay cheap and trouble free, don't.

07. Some of you have been in this forum so long that cynical and dystopic answers come automatically. Isn't it time for you to move on? Or you really feel your input is making this forum better?

Take care out there.

You may like to rethink your maths. OP stated 2MB would last 20 years without the need to work. Stock market may have averaged an 8.3% rise over the last 20 years but this figure is compounded and requires nothing being taken out over that period. If you are taking 5% out each year the return would be a lot lower. If you were unfortnate and markets had a couple of bad years at the start and you took 5% out as well it would be hard to recover from.

Got to laugh at the abuse on this site, its like racism in Texas "cooked just right".

Its incredible how personal everyone got at the beginning of this post, and then continuing to abuse someone who is obviously going through some sort of a mid-life crisis. Divorce etc...

In my opinion there is no set figure that you need to live on in any country, £40k could last 5 life times with the right attitude or it could last 5 minutes depending on your vices. For example you could find a nice little property with a bit of a land, invest in solar, irrigation systems and farming equipmen etc. Find a like minded partner who isn't interested in shiny things and live like a king whilst working on more entrepreneurial ventures like websites, novels and a small teak plantation to pay for retirement. This is something I would like to do myself but unfortunately it does not fit in with my children's education or wife's addiction to city living. I think the modern world has lost touch with reality when it comes to wealth, being rich should be having more than you need to survive. A lot of people on this site will never understand that a life of luxury means different things to different people. To them its just a nice condo, a bar girl and retirement visa, just like it said in the brochure. There are a lot of small minds on this site who don't realize that having health insurance and dental are NOT essential to life.

On another note I think you reacted far to aggressively to the post's on here and you will not get far here with that attitude.

Best of luck!

Although most people reacted to the 2million baht thing, if he wanted to live the kind of lives you outlined, sure, it could done in a forest dwelling, grub eating fashion.

I reacted to his sheer arrogance and condescending attitude towards older people with decades of hard won experience because they weren't rich like he says he will be or they should be.

Where did all you old timer's money go? Life you bastard, Life

Granted. The statement that he worked for 7 years in the West and now lives in Asia suggests he has left his previous job in the West. Then goes on to state he can live for 20 years on 2MB before getting another job. Again, suggests he has no job at the present time.

To OP:

I say again Leosuntime - No matter your question or thought - you and any member are always welcome to share your thoughts. It might be naive, childish, arrogant and maybe even stupid - but the combined maturity and level of expertise far exceeds any emotional "uprising" some might have here. Because that too, could be the result of a bad hair day.

Catweazle -> Your assumptions about me will fail you. But don't let us start getting into polemics, for that there are far better contestants in this thread already spoken.

Don't bite off more than you can chew, Mr. Yang Newbie with a 9 meager posts under your belt! You're off to a bad start here. Time to hit the brakes my friend, before things turn sour!

You write that I am making assumptions about you, what I actually didn't do. Assumptions were made about Mr. Laosomething... this leaves the question if you are not simply a 2nd fake identity to "rescue" your first one which is LaoSunWiener or something... ? Whereas the writing skills of this 2nd avatar are not as poor as the first one...

You also forgot to tell LaoSunBeamer that it is perfectly ok at any given time to tell members here that he will be pissing on their graves. Can't really see the point why anyone, especially a newbie, would try to stand up for someone who obviously possesses neither brain nor manners.

...because I don't like oppressive people like you that subordinate "newbies" with nonsense.

I sent you a PM answering your questions. Better you continue going bananas through a private channel, this is already far off-topic anyways.

Another troll it seems??

Above post and # 158, plus 11 total posts, point that way.

Is there no end to the drones who do nothing more worthwhile than troll?

??? you seem to pick words that are rarely used in day-to-day life and sprinkle them into your text to sound a bit more educated, but you can't fool me, LaoBoy... Don't like oppressive people, huh? But you seem to very much like aggressive, emotional unstable, naive and verbally abusive Trolls and even stand up for them... respectively there is a big chance that you are a carbon copy troll yourself. Ever wondered why nobody likes your posts?

This is fun! You just got me warmed up...

5 generations of monks in a Napalese temple, a farming community based on permaculture and renewable living or maybe setup a small Amish community in Chaing Mai, use your imagination, thats what its there for!

Yeah, if that is the life you want. You could also be a family of beggars or thieves. However, B2M is chicken feed. How many posters here think B2M is enough for one lifetime, let alone five?

If you have some prospects on starting up some in line business or writing a book or something like this...and have about 2 mil thb saved up...

Then sure you can give it a go, but should have a bit more realistic timeline and financial plan in place

A more realistic time line may be... Plan for your 2 mil to last 3 years (55k per month)

Then give it a go... Realizing that if you can not get a book published or the online thing off the ground within 3 years.. Then it is not likely to happen

So if you get to 2.5 years and you are not yet able to support your self with these other things, start planning your exit strategy

i already finished the book, i like it alot, and im writing the second one now, its really not that hard to do, there is such a massive freelance community out there that can do pretty much any thing you want for cheap, editors and artists, voice actors, etc, and for those negative people who like to punch wholes in every thing with their imaginary images of of what things are not like! the quality of the freelancer u hire is as good as what you can measure with your own two hemispheres! Plus you get better as you go.

This is why i can NOT understand how a farang can spend his whole life and end up with no savings, no plan for inflation etc, and not marketable human captial! We are living in the greatest age of human history everything and anything is at your fingertips. The people who are rude to me make me want to succeed with such a fury that it is hard to put into words! What I really want to say is that you <deleted> wouldn't like to know what I really wanna say Cu.. okay i had better stop.

55k a month... i live a life of pure luxury atm and im spending about 6-10k a month.

I often have the unpleasure of talking to old farang who continuous like gripe about young people on their phones all the time. Your brains are rotting, my 22 year old sex friend supprises me all the time with new apps that are so unbelievable awesome!! and she sux with technology so bad.

I do enjoy talking to old farang but i hate you people so much at the same time, i know you people will abuse me again, just remember you started it, so ill make sure ill piss on your graves.
Quote my 22 year old sex friend

Your 22 year old sex friend will help you depart from your money and quickly.

I think he is 22 yo. Sex friend goes by the name of Mrs. Palm.

Or maybe that's the age of one of her 5 daughters?.........................coffee1.gif

For a forum of people arguing about who has the most experience in life, im sorry but I see that as being a very narrow minded response. Stating that an alternative lifestyle means you have to live in a forest and eat grubs is just nonsense. During my 29 years on this planet I have stayed in several self sustaining communities that have their own currencies traded in exchange for labor and resources. And I bet anyone of them is probably healthier and happier than 99% of those posting in this forum.

I was just making the point that an argument about how much money you "NEED" to live for 20 years is pointless.

I do agree that the OP came across as ageist and rude in the initial post also there was really no point to his question. Everyone has a unique sob story of how they ended up in their situation, but I think in 90% of cases it just comes down to the proverbial "slow horses and fast women".

Got to laugh at the abuse on this site, its like racism in Texas "cooked just right".

I totally agree. I could have decided to be "green" at the age of 16 and lived a happy life on the welfare state for 40 odd years and look forward to a happy retirement paid for by the idiots that work for a living.

I was not implying that scrounging from a welfare system is a good way to live your life... I grew up in the country were we used to grow our own food, raise our own life stock and worked towards being self sufficient. Those were the days!

I managed to squirrel away 2 million baht from my work in the west.

I am living in asia now, i calculate that i can continue living here for about 20 years before needing to get another job.

The first thing you need to do is get a new calculator, because that's only 8300 baht per month.

The homeless spend more then that a month . I have a large card board box you can live in . You should be looking for work now.
