BANGKOK: -- Officials are preparing to release teak boards and logs found on a former MP's land in Chiang Mai last week back to their owner after they were shown to have been legally acquired.

The former MP is Yodchanan Wongsawat, son of former prime minister Somchai and a nephew of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Yodchana's mother Yaowapha is also an influential national politician.

Suthep Pavareswityaral, director of the Forest Resource Management Office 1, said yesterday that suspicion was aroused because the owner did not file a report to his office about moving the wood. "In fact, the owner must notify us," he said.

A local contractor, Sombat Phromsane, produced permits for transporting the wood, which he said he bought from a villager in Tak district and stored at the Wongsawat compound for four months, as he was planning to build a house with it. He said he borrowed the compound through his connection with a housemaid of Yaowapa.

Officials from Tak have already showed up to reassure authorities that the teak came from an old house in the western province. "The house was disassembled and transported out of Tak. I can testify to that," said Boonrak Fak-orn, an official whose mark is imprinted on the logs and boards.

Of course there's no question the documents were genuine, after all there's no such thing as fake, false or forged paperwork in LoS.

In the land of deceit, it can be hard to believe things.... I am not buying any of this .

Does that make sense to anyone ???? If things were on the up and up, then why did

this ever come up ? A massive loss of face and national bad news. I think someone got

busted, money was transferred, and now out of the blue comes the " correct paperwork".

Since investigative reporting does not actually exist here, odds are we will never know

the real story here. Can only conjecture based upon past stories, such as all the phony

land ownership documents that came out of the Phuket land office, enabling well

connected people to steal land...

If you saw the wood on the news, some of it was older some of it was freshly sawn, not used wood. Possible that the fresh stuff was not teak though.

Sometimes it is difficult to see the wood from the trees. Nuff said.

The original report must have been an honest mistake.

What I am saying is that some people here will try to find a problem were there isn't one, instead of concentrating on facts,

Presumably you also rushed to Abhisit's defence when he produced documents to prove that he had legally been exempted from military service which satisfied the army but was hounded by the Thaksin government that ordered the Defence Ministry to dismiss him retroactively in spite fo the army's own ruling.

We are talking about a family with a known history of criminality and hiding behind domestic servants. It is not surprising that readers don't give them the benefit of the doubt.

But hey, all is in order. The contractor has the right paperwork, the housemaid got permission for him for store the timber on land belonging to her helpful employers and those nice officials came from where it was bought to confirm the story. All seems very straightforward and normal - everything in order, all documentation readily available and all the people involved coming forward so quickly and explaining it.

An unabashed full-blown anti-Thaksin witchhunt has been green-lighted, so all documents would have gone over with a toothcomb for signs of anything non-kosher.

For example, how can a normal traffic cop know if the declared wood corresponds with the actual loaded timber?
The tracking systems here are not so sophisticated.
A residual doubt exists.
