webfact
Teak on ex-MP's land 'cleared'Patinya SrisupamartThe NationBANGKOK: -- Officials are preparing to release teak boards and logs found on a former MP's land in Chiang Mai last week back to their owner after they were shown to have been legally acquired. The former MP is Yodchanan Wongsawat, son of former prime minister Somchai and a nephew of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.Yodchana's mother Yaowapha is also an influential national politician.Suthep Pavareswityaral, director of the Forest Resource Management Office 1, said yesterday that suspicion was aroused because the owner did not file a report to his office about moving the wood. "In fact, the owner must notify us," he said.A local contractor, Sombat Phromsane, produced permits for transporting the wood, which he said he bought from a villager in Tak district and stored at the Wongsawat compound for four months, as he was planning to build a house with it. He said he borrowed the compound through his connection with a housemaid of Yaowapa.Officials from Tak have already showed up to reassure authorities that the teak came from an old house in the western province. "The house was disassembled and transported out of Tak. I can testify to that," said Boonrak Fak-orn, an official whose mark is imprinted on the logs and boards.-- The Nation 2014-06-

Popular Post EyesWideOpen
In the land of deceit, it can be hard to believe things.... I am not buying any of this . A contractor storing timber on his land because he has a " connection" with the maid? Does that make sense to anyone ???? If things were on the up and up, then why did this ever come up ? A massive loss of face and national bad news. I think someone got busted, money was transferred, and now out of the blue comes the " correct paperwork". Since investigative reporting does not actually exist here, odds are we will never know the real story here. Can only conjecture based upon past stories, such as all the phony land ownership documents that came out of the Phuket land office, enabling well connected people to steal land... ramrod711
If you saw the wood on the news, some of it was older some of it was freshly sawn, not used wood. Possible that the fresh stuff was not teak though.

steelepulse
It appears the original tea money wasn't enough, otherwise this would never have even seen the light. Good thing the tea money was topped up and papers declared legit.

Shame on people for thinking that this family would be doing anything above the law. Moving on with more important issues... How many honest mistakes does it take to lose 500,000,000,000 THB? Popular Post UbonRatch
If the pictures posted in various media were truly representative, then how is an ancient house made from newly felled logs - still with bark and kind of sort of weirdly still trunk shaped with sap still weeping? And don't say I'm barking up the wrong tree. This stinks of more attempted and continued corruption from the Shitn family MEMBERS!
Popular Post Pimay1
He said he borrowed the compound through his connection with a housemaid of Yaowapa. hmm, maid, maid, connection with a housemaid. It's early and I'm on my first cup but I seem to remember something about another connection with a housemaid working for a family with the same name back in 2001 involving millions of dollars. Or maybe I'm just dreaming again.

Sure questionable documents are used here often. What I am saying is that some people here will try to find a problem were there isn't one, instead of concentrating on facts, of course considering the high profile of the country and it former politicians that all investigations will be looked at in far greater detail. Now just WHO declared the documents legit? and who made the claim that the wood was illegally acquired and the motive for doing so?

Dogmatix
If you control the whole government, how difficult would it be to get a lowly government official on 20k a month to sign documents asserting that the logs came from an old house? Must be some carrots and sticks that can be applied.

I though someone might want to check the age of the wood? But hey, all is in order. The contractor has the right paperwork, the housemaid got permission for him for store the timber on land belonging to her helpful employers and those nice officials came from where it was bought to confirm the story. All seems very straightforward and normal - everything in order, all documentation readily available and all the people involved coming forward so quickly and explaining it.

Not in this case. An unabashed full-blown anti-Thaksin witchhunt has been green-lighted, so all documents would have gone over with a toothcomb for signs of anything non-kosher. A few false accusations are unfortunate collateral damage. I wish the Coup leaders could be more subtle about this pogrom - at least attempt to make it a bit less embarrassingly obvious!
tomacht8
Then this must be probably all correct. But in Thailand one genuine document is often used for a variety of illegal operations. There was actually this old teak house. Disassembled and equipped with offical documents. The possible misuse of this authentic document for other illegal timber transports can not be excluded. For example, how can a normal traffic cop know if the declared wood corresponds with the actual loaded timber? The tracking systems here are not so sophisticated.A residual doubt exists.
Dogmatix
The documents proving that large shipments of rice were exported to China are also beyond reproach because they were signed by a Commerce Minister, a deputy Commerce Minister and 13 senior bureaucrats in the Foreign Trade Department. It's in the Sermon on the Mount. And the Lord Thaksin saw that his followers were homeless and in need of shelter. So the Lord went to Tak and blessed an old teak house and told it to go forth and multiply. The heavens darkened and government officials were struck with awe at the Lord's bountiful generosity. The house was reborn as 5,000 new teak houses to provide shelter for the Lord Thaksin's shivering followers.
