Bomb explosion rocks capital hours before curfew lifted

BANGKOK: -- A Russian made hand grenade was thrown at a police booth near Rama 9 intersection Friday night, damaging four vehicles but no injuries.

The explosion happened at about 7.30 p.m., two hours before the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), would announce the lifting of the curfew nationwide at 9.00 p.m.

Bangkok’s police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) chief Pol Col Kamthorn Ouicharoen said EOD was alerted of the explosion at 9.30 p.m. and quickly rushed to the scene to inspect along with soldiers.

The scene is at a garden patch at the left turn to Asoke road near Rama 9 intersection.

A small hole of two centimetres deep was created by the bomb which was found to be Russian-made RGD5 type grenade as its safety pin with serial number erased was discovered at the scene.

He said the grenade has a destroying range of six metres in radius.
The explosion punctured tyres of two cars and caused slight damages to two other cars parked near a police booth which has its glass windows shattered.

Police are cooperating with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to check surveillance cameras nearby and at the scene for clues.

Initially the police suspected the bomb explosion was the work of politically-motivated ill-intentioned people intending to incite disorder in the country..

So with all the other enforced changes within the organisation it seems their terminology and public statements have been changed too and become more decisive as in the past they would have said they were checking to see if the incident was politically motivated or due to business or personal conflicts or ... or ... etc.

Well, that went well. Looks like they need the curfew afterall.

The news story says that the explosion occurred at 7:30PM near the police booth. Thai police responded to an "alert" at 9:30PM. Way to go Thailand. No Police must have been in the booth at this major intersection and it took others two hours to respond.

Ii suspect you are barking up the wrong tree. The size of the explosion was obviously designed to attract attention, but to whom or to what? At a guess I would say it was what the Nation describes as the "insurgents in the restive South" pushing their cause higher up the junta's agenda.

I actually expect it's something similar as opposed to being politically-motivated. A lot of the 'mafia' gangs are having their income streams shut down, so they are likely to want to vent their frustration on the police, since they are the carriers of the new message...!!

Most of us would like to see exposure while some would like to see explosion.

Explosion at Rama IX Intersection probably not related to politics: deputy police chief

BANGKOK: -- Deputy Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Somyos Pumphanmuang said Saturday that the explosion at the Rama IX Intersection Friday night might not be related to politics.

He said the explosion occurred at 7:05 pm before the lifting of the curfew.

Police found that the bomb was a Russian-made RDG5 grenade. Somyos said someone might discard the grenade there and a car might accidentally run over it.

He said it was also possible that the explosion was caused by a fight between local rival gangs of teenagers.

Not really. This is pretty serious stuff, now one of the pavements has a 2cm hole in it. What if someone trips and what will tourists think if they see the damage on Bangkoks beautiful footpaths? This hole is going to make Thailand look bad.

They were mothers, who have enjoyed the curfew cause their kids (street monkey boys) couldn't stay in streets after 10 pm ....

The bomb blew off at 7:05 and the bomb squad was alerted at 9:30?

The bomb squad should`ve been alerted at the latest 7:08.

Erm.... The police were all involved with these mafia gangs and in some case WERE the mafia gangs in the times before the military takeover.

Maybe the police are throwing grenades at themselves?

What is the betting that CCTV footage shows someone on a motorcycle with no license plate. Possibly leading to a new order making it a very serious offense not to have a license plate and can make you a target as a suspected terrorist.
