7 Cambodian migrant workers killed in a road accident on their rush back home

Seven Cambodian migrant workers were killed and 13 injured when a pick-up truck in which they were travelling on their way back home in Cambodia skidded out of the highway and crashed into a roadside tree in Chachoengsao province Saturday night.

Three of the victims were crushed to death in the truck which turned into a wreck from the violent impact. It took rescue workers more than an hour, using heavy equipments, to retrieve the bodies out of the wreckage.

Three others were thrown out of the vehicle and died. The seventh victim died shortly after he was rushed to Panom Sarakham hospital.

No identity papers were found in the bodies of the dead victims or among the injured, said the police. But about 50,000 baht in Thai currency were found at the scene.

Pol Lt Samart Muangmusik, enquiry officer of Ratchasart police station in Chachoengsao, said that all the migrant workers came from Samut Prakan province and were heading for Aranyaprathet where they would cross the border back home in Cambodia.

This group of Cambodian migrant workers was just a part of tens of thousands of foreign migrant workers on the rush for home as a result of a widespread rumour that the military junta would take harsh action against the illegal workers.

Because they are well aware of the nationalist rhetoric sweeping the country and they are only too aware of the animosity towards Cambodians by the Thais. And theres clearly some rumours going around and there hasnt been any attempt to deny them or reassurance.

If I were a Cambodian id be gone permit or not, Nearly every family lost people in the days of Pol Pot... they have a real and sensible fear of being a victim of any strong arm military takeover, especially one that had the Thai armed forces pointing fingers at Cambodia for staging attacks and being blamed for recent insurgency.

Who the heck needs to take the chance when half of your elder family or maybe all were wiped out as recently as the 80s

Its not just the Cambodians leaving by choice in big numbers. But of course theres no crackdown ohhh no nothing to see here all just rumours

The numbers are irrelevant. The principle is paramount.

As i already said knee jerk reaction without a gameplan isnt the answer, a system to make it accessible to employ migrants and a transition to that with time allowed without causing panic in the well needed and willing migrant workforce would be the logical route.

Oh numbers are indeed relevant, A principal is one thing, real results that last are quite another.

Rome wasnt built in a day, Thailand wont be in a few weeks. Ideas and principals are the easy bit, implementing them effectively and steadily with a well thought out and researched, workable solution is the hard part. One should not act on something before there is a mapped out route and goal or its likely to cause un thought out problems and ripples in other areas.

I see a lot of the former and little of the latter. History will be the judge.

because there is a major crackdown in force. seen it myself in Chiang Mai. camps raided by the police.

Blaming immigration policies on these sad deaths is like blaming a Sunny day for the deaths in the rainy season if they had been headed to the beach.

If there's really 100k+ heading East, there should be far more accidents than just one. Compare to the songkran exodus from BKK to provinces.

It is alright for any government to get rid of illegal immigrant workers.

But why on earth are we not reading anything about employers who are employing the illegals ?

Why do we read about Cambodian illegals and nothing from illegals from Lao or Myanmar ?

I guess many houses will not be finished on time, many roads don't get fixed, the restaurants, farms and some factories

are looking desperately for (cheap) workers.

Poor migrant workers. Came for a better life, to earn a little more money for a possible better life....all gone now and its all dark and cold. so many poor family members who depended on them , will be lost with pain of losing the loved one and with the pain of dark future. May God gives the family the strenght to bare the loss and pain. Amen

travelling in the back of a pickup which is a common sight in Thailand=no chance of survival

If you want to drive like this, make sure the driver is sober and drives slowly . I have seen farangs as passengers in some of these pickups. Why risk it ?
