BANGKOK: -- The Criminal Court yesterday rejected the bail plea of the former model, who was arrested for smuggling a very small amount of cocaine through Don Mueang airport in late 2012.

Chatchaya Cuesta Ramos, aka Yuyee, was sentenced to 15 years prison and a fine of THB1.5 million last Thursday for smuggling 251mg of cocaine.

Another three-month jail term for possession of endangered species was also added after the authorities searched her home and found a number of wild animals. She has been held in Bangkhen Central Women's Prison since. [read more...]

I'm sorry, but seriously, that is a ridiculous sentence for such a minuscule amount of coke. 251 mg for pity's sake.

Even coconuts is making this point if the last line in their article [not included in OP here] is anything to go by.

Yep - a true Thai sense of proportion here....................bail granted for the cop-killing Ferrari driver but NO bail for trying to import a miniscule amount of cocaine.

A great advert for the Thai version of justice.

What a silly girl.

Down to a quarter of a gram - why not throw it in the bin instead of risking bringing it through an international airport?

Still - not deserving of 15 years.

The difference between this drug addict and a drug addict driving a Ferrari and killing a cop is the latter has mega bucks and that goes a long way here.

Didn't an old couple get a hefty sentence for illegally picking mushrooms.

How many tourists know what they are potentially facing when their ' bit of fun ' goes wrong ?

Looks from the pictures that Yuyee consumed most of her goods herself. Have such an idea that quite some crystal meth was involved as well.

Clueless

What kind of joke is it?

Cop-killer RedBull faggot got bail, already he is gone.

9 people killer face-book idiot hi-so girl got bail also, already she has forgotten every "uncomfortable memories".

T. China-wattra got 2 (TWO) years in jail for a huge fraud run.

This unlucky girl didn't get it for 250 MILI-gram (= 1/4 gram ! only) cocaine.

Fake CD vendor poor woman with 2 small children got 3 years on jail for sale fake CD.

I can't imagine it.

Buy the way I hope she won't get death penalty at final.

Ridiculous penalty. Obviously it was personal use, they should have slapped her with a stint in rehab and community service.

Mrs Cuesta Ramos will have to search her memories and come up with names and connections. This little amount was probably an introduction for her Kamnan and/or his minions. With a little effort she could get witness protection.

Stay tuned ...

This sentence is ridiculous and leaves Thailand open to ridicule on an international level.

I've seen cases where someone is sentenced to 10 years in prison for murder yet here we have someone being sentenced to 15 years for a tiny amount of cocaine. Trafficking charges and sentences should be for traffickers not casual users like this woman. Not differentiating between someone with a suitcase stuffed full of drugs and someone with a small amount in a pocket makes them look incompetent and vindictive.

For those who agree with this 15 year sentence, please compare it with the following 10 year sentence for a man who murdered someone :

Phuket expat Ronald Fanelli was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murdering bar girl Wanphen Pienjai and stuffing her body into a suitcase.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/509859-american-fanelli-sentenced-to-10-years-for-phuket-bar-girl-murder/

From this we can deduce the Thai legal systems value of life. Murder is a much more 'wholesome' and less serious crime than having a quarter of a gram of cocaine in your pocket while walking through customs.

Based on the above this woman would have got less time in prison for murdering the customs officer than for getting caught by him with the small packet of drugs.

Ever thought that she had no idea that she had it on her. Many drug users leave and forget stuff, not an excuse but it does happen. Edited by mrtoad

She was convicted of smuggling drugs into LOS with the intent to supply... ie. Drug trafficking.

The court dismissed her defence of 'personal use'.. therefore they have sentenced her as a smuggler/dealer.... What for 0.25g???

Crazy... what the hell do they think she was doing with it?... cutting it down to 0.0025g wraps worth 50 Satang each?????

This is purely ridiculous... of course it was for personal use... But the horrendous thing is. She knows that the court will not lose face for its major <deleted>-kup and reduce it down... even with public pressure. A true victim of Thainess.

she is most likely suspected of being an initiator in the scene rather than a mule. This is common practice in that trade. The actual smuggling is carried out by mules and other means then.

Yesterday they arrested two Nigerians who got the stuff mailed to Chonburi. Both were registered as students at RU and ABAC. I quick search and I found the registrations online for 2009 and 2011.

There will be many more to be exposed ...

I feel sorry for her , she will be an old maid by the time she gets out, .25 of a gram is hardly intent to sell its barely enough for personal use.I seen people do much worse and never see the inside of a cell.

'...bail granted for the cop-killing Ferrari driver but NO bail for trying to import a miniscule amount of cocaine."

She's been out on bail since she was arrested in 2012.

Now that she has been found guilty and sentenced, it's time for her to do her time.

That's the way it's done in most places. Arrest - bail - conviction - jail.

Her husband Franck Cuesta says it was even less than that, not 250mg but only 5mg, an empty bag but that it magically became 250mg when it went to the judiciary.

Incidentally, does coconuts have to call her "cocaine-smuggling Yuyee" everybody can see the decision is moronic, how about showing a little discernment?

You guys forget to mention "Dubai Dude" getting two years for corruption in office !!

There was a time in China when a person that was guilty of corruption was executed. Of couse now China's pendulum has swung from True Communism back to the Corruption of Capitalism, for some and still dog poor for the masses.
