MIGRANT WORKERS
Fewer Cambodians seen fleeing in Sa Kaew

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Life returned to normal in Sa Kaew's Aranyaprathet border area yesterday as more Cambodians returned to sell their goods at the Rong Kleu Market.

Officials manning the checkpoint - led by Captain Apinan Songkhramchai from the Burapha Task Force's Paramilitary Ranger Company 1206 and Sa Kaew immigration police deputy chief Pol Lt-Colonel Benjapol Rodsawat - said yesterday that fewer buses and trucks transporting Cambodian workers were passing through.

They also said workers crossing the borders no longer looked terrified of Thai officials.

Less than 500 Cambodians arrived at the Aranyaprathet train station yesterday compared to the 3,000 workers crossin over almost every day.

The Rong Kleu Market was buzzing with more Cambodians working at their stalls, while dozens of Cambodian students also crossed the border around noon to visit their parents.

I guess those that were going have gone?

180,000?

And no longer terrified of Thai officials?

Greeted with the traditional Thai smile no doubt!

It can take a long time to get a good pitch at the market. I assume many were more nervous about losing their spot.

They may think twice next time about listening to rumours of people supposedly being massacred by the Junta.

Stupid people, and the farangs who believed it also.

You know who you are.

I have heard from a usually unreliable source in Khon Kaen there's a story going round that the police have been instructed to crackdown on the I/D etc of foreigners from the west which I suppose will include Oz, NZ and so on.

No suggestion if this is nationwide or localised in KK or whether it will include random stops, checks in bars etc and Deep Throat didn't respond to questions about it. i think we need more info before freaking out.

Anyone out there able to confirm this, expand on it or write it off as another wild rumour ?

I elieve it is very easy for Cambodians, Laos to work here in mnay jobs legally with paperwork, health etc, why don't they ?

Just like it's supposed to be easy for farangs to work easily in Thailand? And yes, I have been through the system in TL and many other Asian countries.

Unlike us luckier people who often take things for granted, a great many Khmers have had little or nothing in the way of education and will be exploited and extorted if they try to do things the right way. It must seem all so simple to someone from a 'rich' country who received a free education.

I'm married to a Khmer from a poor(ish), background, it's all relative here, and live and work with Khmers and have a reasonable understanding of how things are for them.

Always wise to walk a mile in others shoes before judging them in any way.

Because they have to pay lots of bribes in order to get the correct paperwork. Expensive!

The ignorance of many members absolutely astounds me!

If everyone on a visa extension has all their papers in order, why would there be a problem. Most people I know carry a copy of their passport and current extension with them at all times.
If stopped by the police a lot depends on one's attitude. If you run your mouth, chances are you will be answering more questions. Co-operation and a wai always help.
