Chuwit's tip on gambling den proves correct

BANGKOK: -- Police will invite Rak Prathet Thai Party leader Chuwit Kamolvisit to provide more information on gambling dens, after a tip-off he made a few years ago proved good.

"We welcome information from all sides and we will ask Chuwit for some too," Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner Aek Angsananont said yesterday.

He was speaking after a joint team of police and soldiers raided a building in Wang Thong Lang in Bangkok and found a large amount of gambling equipment there. The building was a site that Chuwit said a gambling den had operated a few years ago. A raid at that time, however, did not turn up any gambling equipment.

Wang Thong Lang District Office chief Thanita Praewanich said yesterday the den had operated at a place registered as a golf driving range. "We will find out the identity of the owner," she said.

Known as "Number One" gambling den, the building was equipped with baccarat desks and several types of gambling equipment.

During the raid on Thursday, officials arrested 37 suspects - 23 Cambodians, 12 Thais and two from Myanmar. The suspects said they were hired to move the gambling equipment out of the premises but police arrived before they got the chance.

"We are serious about cracking down on gambling dens," Aek said yesterday, dismissing any speculation that police may allow such illegal activities to prosper.

He said Thursday's raid was possible largely because of Metropolitan Police Division 4. An investigation is ongoing.

Not to mention the massive increase in thefts/burglaries/robberies as a result of those who are unable to control their gambling also being unable to pay their rent...!!

correct, I suspect only for the army involvement this would not be in the news - pity they didn't pounce when this was in full swing - maybe the army should be doing this on their own and keep the police out of the loop

The gang wars you describe might be local pockets of fat cats in rural communities that have little access to technology..... But their days would be numbered. Easy betting for tiny stakes on mobile apps are a reality all over the world. The Thai's will catch up....... Eventually

They threw a tarp over the top of the gear and it couldn't be seen

" We are so serious that we will be raiding an illegal casino located in Sathorn near the Surasak BTS station next Thursday at 11 p.m.precisely." he added.

I don't know why they don't just legalize gambling, Thais will gamble if its illegal or not.

Making gambling legal is a good idea But if you do that you need to educate the public too. I'm from a gambling state So crime is the same actually a bit lower because of increased police and security, low taxes plenty of jobs, and the thing Thailand loves tourists But of course you need to bring in the big investors to open and run the operations and a tax system to benefit Thailand and increase wages of police and military. Then get rich Thai's to invest in construction and operations end of casino's. It would offer better nightlife entertainment wise and bring in High end tourist and hotel investments. But your talking of billions of US dollars of investments Improvement of infrastructure.

No casinos need building no infrastructure etc... it is already there out in the garden or in a dingy room somewhere there are Thais gambling in their 10's of thousands daily.
