Just last night my wife told me of a scam here I've not heard of and not sure if any others here know about it,

goes something like this, you go too a fuel station and fill up your car or bike, the service pump operator put's a bag of yaba or whatever in the fuel cover of your car or in bag around your fuel tank on your bike, you pay and drive away, aprox 500 meters down the road the police stop you search your car/ bike and find yaba or alike and you pay 200,00 for it to go away. any other TV users heard of this one?

Cheers.

I also read on T.V.sometimes they may not re-set the money counter so you pay for more than you get.

I heard about these 'plants' and other dangers about thailand before i came here.

'Plants' turn out to be the least i have been able to confirm, nor hear about, most all the other stories turned out true to some extent.

that would make life difficult for the staff at the petrol stations would you not think......

considering they are full time employees , and decent enough people to make an honest living,

it is just another paranoid story

For the car it sounds plausible but a Bike ?

Most bikes have the petrol tank under the seat (Honda Wave etc etc), but it could be done if you aren't watching.

A small bag of pills that gets recycled each time, planted on a passing motorist who looks to be from out of town? Remember rego plates show province. What are you going to do too the employee? Who will win THAT argument.

As I said, Albert, my wife claims this occurs to Thais as well, so it's not just another paranoid story (perpetuated by falangs)

Plenty of paranoid stories perpetuated by Thais (many more than are perpetuated by farangs).

This might work where bikes are concerned but I don't think it would stand up to much scrutiny if many cars were being discovered with small amounts of drugs under the fuel cap. You can't get much lower than a pump attendant - they're not going to win too many arguments, especially when they have no idea who they're picking on.

I've heard of this one too, it was reported in Thai some time ago, maybe a couple of years back.

The version I heard was that the guy with the car saw something happen when having his car filled up ith petrol but drove off anyway. He stopped and took a look and found a couple of Yabba tablets hidden under the lockable fuel flap.

He threw them away and continued driving. He was then stopped by a confused police officer a few hundred meters down the road who immediately went looking for the tablets.

I don't know how much of a urban myth this is.

Total rubbish.

This is one of those rumours that have been circulating over the years, probably started by someone or people who try to demean Thailand for whatever reasons.

Have you heard the one regarding the farang who was driving his car through a green traffic light and was hit by a car driven by a Thai driving through a red light and when the case went to court the judge awarded the Thai driver damages saying that it was the farang`s fault because he was there at the time. That one has been circulating for at least the last 40 years.

There are probably many more of these tales running the farang circuits and all of them are BS, trust me on this one.

Even if this is true, that I doubt very much, the police wouldn't dare to get involved in these kind of scams, nowadays, that the army, keeps a sharp eye on them.thumbsup.gif

What if the cleaning lady or a nightly visitor "plants" something in your room?

Cheers.

No problem, my wife is a disguise and make-up specialist and my brother in law can get you a one way ticket to Argentina

Last month an American guy here in Chiang Mai was awaiting a court hearing after being charge with stealing a can of EST cola from Tesco Express, a crime that could carry a 25 year jail sentence. After having a 1 hour disguise treatment from my wife and secured a flight to Argentina by her brother, the American is now living safely in Buenos Aires with his 19 year old arranged marriage Argentinian wife.

Never heard about this until now, don't now anyone that this has happened to, and there are no English language reports in online newspapers describing such a thing.

Can I not trust you on this one.. Unless you really have been here for 40 years !!

I think this was a story/rumour started by Thais and not the farang trying to demean Thais. My wife was the one that told me about this and she had heard it from other Thais, so bang goes your theory.

Well, if your wife heard this rumour from other Thais than that confirms it, you can`t trust me on this one. Perhaps it`s all a conspiracy and was started by some Thai political extremists as a diabolical plan to scare off farangs considering moving to Thailand?

I have also heard of this before and also thought it was a story until I met a Thai who had been subjected to the scam. Decent young lass too.

It pays to be vigilent at all times.

Lots of strange things happen here and I'd be wary of those people that class it all as BS, they tend to have their own agenda. Whether this one is true or not, being vigilant at all times is the way to go.

Absolute BS it would be on camera at the gas station and the bag would need your fingerprints unless you tested positive.

Scams at gas stations include selling 91 as 95 and as others have said not resetting the meter and meter tampering. Never use small gas stations unless you need to.

Same as the story about falungs getting arrested for putting their foot on a banknote when they've dropped it. BS.
