Hi All,

Been browsing this forum for awhile - very informative & helpful. I'll be in Chiang Mai the first 2 weeks of July, staying at Vingbua. I'm bringing my MacBook because I've got to keep up with work back in the US.

Vingbua promises in-room high-speed internet, which is critical for my work. I'm hoping I'll get there, and be able to connect no problems.

BUT...if not, are there any Mac experts in CM or anyone have suggestions about someone to contact if I do need help setting up a wireless connection and getting online?

Thanks.

There are 2 Apple centre's in town that I know off both run by same people. One in the Airport Plaza shopping centre but try the other on Srimankalajarn off Sutep Road. Number is 053 224 058/059.

I understand the Mac shop on Srimankalajarn is very good I have a friend that seems to be going there all the time, he says the service is great and they fix or replace his note book fast. I'm not sure if that says a lot for Mac though since he is taking the note book in all the time, can't say I have ever had to take my IBM's anywhere except to work.

Well good luck.

FWIW, I've hung out in the lobby of Vingbua mansions waiting for clients, and was able to use my powerbook on the wireless internet system there with no problems. Just connected to the network, typed in the password. Easy, and a fairly nice place to stay.

This is the website for for the Singapore based outfit that runs the two Apple shops in CM.

If you have an Applecare issue they send it to their main location in Singapore which is an authorized Apple service center and reseller. If the Singapore operation can't resolve it then they ship it back to California. All in all the service is decent and reasonably quick given the situation.

Just be prepared for sticker shock. Prices for just about any Apple product are 20 to 30% higher than stateside.

An Ipod 60GB is 2100bt cheaper than in the UK!

the 60 gig Ipod is nearly 4,000 baht more in Thailand than the US. That's compared to a major retailer like compusa.com. There are a number of less expensive ways to find Apple gear.

As an aside if you are going to buy Applecare for any Apple product then buy it over Ebay from a US seller. There are a number of them that will register it for you without the need to ship it. I had it shipped to my brother in Seattle but really didn't need anything from the physical package.

The Applecare package for my new MacBook Pro is 15,000 baht here in CM.

I was able to get the package from an Ebay seller for for 6,500 baht. Once its registered in the Apple database then its good until the expiration date. You can enter your SN# on the support webpage and see its status.
