webfact
Beauty pageants call for capital punishmentBANGKOK: -- Miss Grand Thailand 2014 and four runners-up today called on the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to introduce capital punishment for rapist murderer and to conduct speedy judicial process to prosecute sex violators. All the beauty pageants were clad in black when they submitted the call to the military junta head Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha via the junta’s spokesman Col Winthai Suwaree this morning at the Army Headquarter. All the beauty pageants led by Miss Grand Thailand 2014 Parapadsorn Disdamrong said they clad in black to mourn the death of Nong Gaem, the 13-year-old girl student who was raped and killed on a night sleeper train on her way back to Bangkok Sunday night by a state railway employee catering to the sleeper bogey she seated. They called on the junta chief to amend the existing law to introduce capital punishment for rapist murderer so that it will serve as a reminder for sex violators that they be given maximum sentence for the crime.Besides the beauty pageants also urged that all sex violation cases be processed with speed and punishment be handed down immediately, reasoning that prompt action could help ease the increasing sex violation cases. They also asked for increased security personnel at all public places, educate women through the media on how to defend themselves against sex threats, and to declare clear policy on sex violations so as to remind would-be violators of the maximum penalty if they commit the sex crimes.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/beauty-pageants-call-capital-punishment/ -- Thai PBS 2014-07-10

bigbamboo
IMO anyone who has committed the crime this worthless SRT worker did should the world a favour and do the honourable thing by taking his own life. As far as capital punishment goes an eye for an eye seems fair provided you are confident that when the police get their man it is the right one. DrTuner
How long is the line to the NCPO now ? Backed up until Nong Khai ? Seems every one and their estranged cousin is lining up for some request or another. And isn't capital punishment for rape&murder already in the law ? I remember seeing it in the other thread. Pib
Thailand has capital punishment; it's just they rarely carry it out....last time was 2 people in 2009 for drug offenses. Aggravated Murder, and also certain Rape situations can result in the death penalty. 35 different crimes can get you the death penalty. See this webpage for details. Obviously they represent the general public in their outrage after these atrocities occur. However, it would be a lot more impressive if they could come up with measures to help prevent the rape/murders BEFORE these sociopaths commit these horrendous acts. Ok and there it is, under Aggravated Murder: "Rape of a woman or a girl under the age of 15, if it results in death. ". So they can sentence the perp to death already. As I think they should. tx22cb
In many countries, beauty pageant contestants wish for world peace and children's education - here they lobby for capital punishment, which makes for an unexpected change. Mind you, life in prison is no bed of roses ... no doubt someone can introduce the pretty POS to the Thai equivalents of Bubba
Bluespunk
Compere: and Ms X what will you do if you win? Ms X: campaign for world peace and support any Facebook campaign likely to give me undeserved publicity. Compere: : that will do nicely. mojorison
Surreal - in most countries beauty queens are the target of jokes for their intellectual abilities ... It's not just that, it is also the sexualization of the female form which may be linked in some small manner to crimes involving violence against women....so it is indeed ironic that they have formed a body...(a hot one at that) to vocalise their views on capital punishment. It's is very perverse.
apetley
Their cause would be better served if they could at least try a more sombre look as they handed over the petition. The 'look how pretty I am' smile and tiaras smacks of little more than a photo op.

wprime
Why do they need to amend the law? Rape of an under 15 yr old causing death carries either a life sentence or the death penalty already. Considering the media coverage, he won't survive in prison long so either way he'll get the death penalty.

northernjohn
Take him to his cell tonight and give him a litre of 40% Thai whiskey, and fifty feet of rope. I was thinking of a cell with a lot of known gay offenders. The only reason this is on the news is to get the police some notoriety. There is a law against rape and one against murder. There should be a law against making such a big deal out of it just so some police can get there picture in the paper. Thai Beauty Queens in the background with English written titles on them that do not declare Miss what but the police men are right there. The suspect will get his just rewards. Hopefully many minor ones first.
