Three aftershocks hit Chiang Rai Monday

CHIANG RAI: -- Three aftershocks rocked two districts of Chiang Rai province on Monday but caused no damages to properties.

The Seismology Bureau of Thai Meteorological Department said the three aftershocks were felt in Phan, Mae Lao and Muang districts of Chiang Rai.

The first aftershock happened at about 4.03 a.m. Monday with epicentre four kilometres deep underground in Phan district. It was measured at 2.3 on the
Richter scale.

The second aftershock of a 3.3 magnitude occurred at 6.06 a.m. in Mae Lao district about 3 kilometres underground.

The Seismology Bureau said houses in both Phan and Mae Lao felt the two aftershocks. The first was felt slightly but the second aftershock shook houses strongly.

The third aftershock of 3.9 magnitude happened at 6.26 a.m. in Mae Lao with epicentre just one kilometre underground. Residents living at Pa-or Donchai village in Muang district of Chiang Rai felt the third aftershock with their houses shaking for 2-3 seconds.

There was no report of damages yet from today’s three aftershocks, the bureau said.

Just curious, but when is it officially an earthquake and not an aftershock? What magnitude constitutes a reset of the aftershock news, after aftershock news? Or is it a certain period of weeks, months, years etc before it’s not called an aftershock?
