Rimmer
Use of horn at Buddhist Shrine leads to shooting in East Pattaya PATTAYA:--An apparent misunderstanding led to a shooting incident close to a Buddhist Shrine on the railroad in East Pattaya on Monday Night.Khun Dumrongsuk aged 30 was riding on his motorbike with his Girlfriend Khun Walapon aged 26. The pair were on their way home after visiting his Mother in the Huay Yai area. The pair drove past a Shrine where it is customary to use the horn on the vehicle three times as a mark of respect.Driving in front of the pair was a car full of people who heard the horn and assumed it related to their driving which angered the driver of the car who decided to slow down and then follow the motorbike which soon pulled into a small petrol station to refill the tank of the bike.As the pair left the car continued to follow and then drove up beside the bike and a passenger shouted at the driver which was followed by two gun shots. - See more at: http://www.pattayaone.net/pattaya-news/134966/use-of-horn-at-buddhist-shrine-leads-to-shooting-in-east-pattaya/#sthash.BiwBaBq4.dpuf -- Pattaya One 2014-07-

Deacon Bell
Must be a special kind of Buddhist calmness that makes you hunt down people and shoot them for beeping their horn. Anyone remember the cases of the pilot being shot on the way to Suwannaphum because he didn't pull over when the Fortuner behind flashed his lights. And the guy in Isaan who shot the politician's son because he was shooting at him because he flashed his lights at him. Why are they so delicate? With no intention of generalizing too much, and with specific reference to the shooters, let me state: What a bunch of complete morons. lucjoker
Murderers are all around you ! Be more careful! If you hear a horn ....run ! Thai shooters are mostly driving a car ,so they can cowardly run off easily . If you see an angry face behind a lowering car window........shoot first or run ,lol ! gp2002
They might want to do away with the "honking as a sign of respect" thing.
Emster23
You can't make this sort of stuff up! Education reform might include anger management techniques, and also somehow work that into Thai TV broadcasts. There seems to be an absence of steps between 0 and 10 when it comes to anger here: it is all or none. Do nothing or kill the other person, no matter the cause. mutha289
Can someone explain the idea of honking your horn as a sign of respect? The brother in law always honks when passing by his mother's tomb but I've never heard the origins of this.
petercool
I was once told that honking horns 3 times when passing shrines - particularly those associated with road accidents that you see sometimes at road sides - is to scare away any ghosts that might try to call you to join them via a fatal accident. Thus it is some form of preventative measure. A temple where someone that you knew was cremated might lead to the same motivation.

96tehtarp
Pattaya attracts all sorts of people. Some of them vary unsavory. Pattaya doesn't have a monopoly on road-rage.

Thai at Heart
Be careful not to generalize too negatively in this thread about all Thais based purely upon the reported actions of a few. Well, so many aspects of the story are so particularly Thai, why not. Honking at a temple. Buddhist. Getting so offended you shoot someone. Face. I will look up the last time this happened outside an Anglican church in the Uk.
Deacon Bell
It's the scooterists that really show their skill at horn honking while passing shrines. It's not easy to do while holding your umbrella and sending a text message at the same time.
