Yer man in question is a doctor and probably from a reputable family and everyone in Thailand knows that these people never really do time for whatever crime they commit, let alone face a death sentence. Most likely it was just handed down to him to make it seem that the justice system is unbiased but we all know better

Hmm so a farang caught with a 1 year overstay gets the same sentence as a Thai doctor who cuts his wife up and flushes her down the toilet: 10 years.

Yep sounds about right.  Amazing Thailand.

Farangs just get expelled for 10 years. We don not get sentenced to 10 yaes in prison. Calm down.

You help us reminding everyone that we in fact are whitey, not Thais, so we are dehumanized, therefore much easier to discriminate against.

Life is very cheap in Thailand but if you overstay your visa the punishment is harsher that's why the country is known as " Amazing Thailand "

You must understand what the concept of a ROYAL PARDON is. His Majesty can grant pardon to whom he pleases. It doesn't matter what he or she has done. If in HM conviction this guy doesn't present a danger to society anymore, having, as it were, served 10 years on death row, the King will issue a pardon. He is not restricted by any institution or Law in this. That's all there is to it.

This is the same thing as a PRESIDENTIAL PARDON. It's really not that difficult to understand.

What you must understand is that people are allowed to wonder about certain individuals receiving pardons and perhaps the feelings stirred in the family or society at large knowing that those individuals received a more lenient sentence than the law decrees they should receive. Also, not really that difficult to understand.

Here are a few details on the good doctor:

This is the link:

http://tam-tampattamarat.blogspot.com/2010/05/dr-wisut.html

I am going to tell you about Dr.Wisut Boonkasemsanti. Do you know him ?
He was a gynecologist respected at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine. He was a murder who killed his wife because he requested a divorce with his wife but his wife did not accept. His wife was Dr. Phassaporn Boonkasemsanti. She was also a gynecologist. His wife suspected that Dr.Wisut had an affair with one of his patients, this conduct was a wrong medical etiquette. Finally, she knew this story and brought it to blackmail her husband. She told that if Dr.Wisut had divorced from her, she would have announced his conduct to the public. So he planed to kill her. On February 20,2001 : Dr.Wisut made an appointment to meet his wife at a restaurant in the Siam Discovery shopping center. Then, he drugged her during the meal. When she looked drowsy, he took his wife out of the restaurant. She has not been seen since then. The same day, Dr.Wisut checked in at Witthayaniwet Residence Hall at Chulalongkorn University, where he is believed to have killed his wife and dismembered her body. The following day, he left the university accommodation and checked in at the Sofitel Central Plaza Hotel. Dr.Wisut disposed of his wife's remain organ parts by cutting up the flesh and flushing the pieces down the toilet at the university accommodation and later at the hotel. The result of DNA tests confirmed that it belonged to Dr.Phassaporn. Furthermore, they discovered the items used for killing such as sedative pills, packages of small and large black plastic bags and a large amount of toilet paper. Eventually, the Supreme Court sentenced him to all his life in prison. In my opinion, it is so sad that the couple solved the problem by killing. It is a better solution if the couple should compromise for each other. This is a lesson for many people so as to avoid the violence.

As a male gynecologist wheres the excitement of having an affair with a patient since you likely already have more intimate knowledge/contact than her bf or husband ?

I would blame it an the royal pardon, Thailand is not so different from other monarchies.

The Royal Pardon counts for certain groups of criminals, but in case of lese majeste it can also count for an individual. All foreigners that went to jail for lese majeste could leave jail within 2 years (because of a royal Pardon). It might be different for Thai people. Drug dealers usually only get very little reduction of their sentence when there's a royal pardon. Most murderers leave jail long before big drug dealers.

Quite a lot of countries that are monarchies have a royal pardon, it's not something typical for Thailand. But very few monarchies send people to jail for lese majeste.

Sending an SMS with a text that can be seen as "Lese majeste" will get you 15 years behind bars and no Royal Pardon.

Not true.

Correct..not exactly true........but maybe there's some similarity of the justice enforced.......LJ is a dispicable law..archaic and so old times......

But...this guy chopped up his wife and is now back and probaly practicing medicine........equality in justice in Thailand??

Not accurate. He was given the death penelty for murder. He was later pardoned. People who have been convicted of lease majesty have been pardoned also.

Do I think him serving only 10 years is ok? No not at all. I just don't think you are describing the situation correctly.

He was sentenced to death in 2007. The doctor has already served two thirds of his punishment - 10 years and 10 months - and he has remaining jail time of three years, two months and five days. Hmmmm WTF!!!!!

If she got 10 years (in Thailand), the amount of drug found on her was higher than the limit they defined for individual use (which is rather low). So, according to the law she was a dealer. Thai people don't go to jail for 10 years, if the amount of drugs found on them is for individual use. Another problem is that she might not have confessed and so doubled her jail time, but even in this case she would have been convicted as a dealer.

Users don't go to jail (but get a big fine) or go to jail up to 1 year.
Very small drug dealers typically go to jail for 3 to 5 years (if they confess). If they don't confess they are in for up to 10 years.
Big dealers go to jail for 15 years up (if they confess).

Also crack is almost impossible to find in Thailand .... it was probably some other drug. Edited by kriswillems

Pre meditated murder such as this would be an automatic life sentence in Britain with a minimum term of maybe 20 years. I fail to see how anybody could consider 7 years a reasonable sentence, the family of the butchered woman must be pretty devastated by this turn of events.
