Plain and simple. If I want to obtain a Non-O for retirement and want to apply in a neighboring country by flying. Exactly what documents to I have to show to get a one time non-o to return to Chiangmai and apply for retirement extension.

If divorcing at local District Office in Sarapi, how long do I have to change my married visa locally into one based on retirement when the divorce has been finalized. Are you given a few days to get in to get new extension based on retirement?

The reason I ask is just had to extend based on marriage until after I finish teaching a University term, then will divorce, and I am thinking about leaving country before divorce to get new one entry Non-o based for retirement before divorce or divorce is finalized.

Thank you in advance.

Thanks for yourreply, but I do have special circumstances. I have lived in CM for 17 years married to a Thai wife and have only gone out of country to KL one tme when I retired from Payap some years ago.. My idea was to apply for the change before the divorce, but immigration said I had to wait until divorce is final, or until my lcurrent married extension was up. I was ready to do that today, but because I took a one term University teaching job to help them out which doesnt end until Oct, I was forced to renew my marriage extension today. In Oct or November will get admin divorce from local district office, but was thinking it would be nice to go out of country to get a new 90 day Non-O for retirement before the divorce, so I don't have the problem of having to process a change of extension on a sudden notice of divorce finalization.

Dan, I've heard of others just coming on a 30 on arrival (who are 50+), then getting their 90 at immigration...and that was actually an easy step, compared to the extension.  It seems like a fly out trip would be more costly than an agent.  Keeping your soon to be ex out of the loop would probably be wise.

You might get better advice in the visa forum, this one is more for finding out important stuff like who has the best hot dog and egg breakfast, and even bigger headlines about motorcycle helmets.  Talk to "ubonjoe."

Welcome Dan, and I wish you the best when it comes to unraveling the tangled webs of the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau.

I can't help you with the specific requirements relating to your current situation, but I can add my voice of support to that of the above poster when he advises you to look elsewhere for your answers.

When he states that he is not an "expert" (on this or any of the other myriad topics in which he routinely offers his considered opinions...), that may well be the understatement of the year in these pages! When he suggests that you would be better off looking for advice from those who actually know what they are talking about instead of himself..... truer words were never spoken!

Just as a case in point, (and on the off chance that you are an American citizen), you might want to think twice when it comes to his recommendation above that you commit flagrant perjury in a sworn statement to an officer of the United States Department of State. There are two ways that that could go, and one of them is very, very, very, very bad for you.

A second opinion from the infinitely more knowledgeable (and infinitely more responsible...) members in the "Thai visas, residency and work permits" subforum is probably your best course of action.

Thanks for any replies. I do not know what I said that indicated that I don't qualify for a retirement visa. I qualify way more than is required. That was not my original question? Thanks for everyones input. My original question had to do with the paperwork required outside of Thailand that is needed to get a 90 day non-O for the purpose of retiring, and the best plce to go if I want to fly. Once you divorce, one has to turn their marrige extension into a retired extension to get the one year extensions.

My second question was upon final divorce date do I need to leave the country the same day or get an extension on same day at immigration. (worried about being able to get in same day for the extension) Is it possible to leave the country and get a new Non-O, thus cancelling my marriage extension, before the divorce is final so I do not have to go through the rush. Immigration in CM, as unhelpful as they sometimes are, when ask about it, said they would not let me just come in and get an extension based on retirement until the end of my marrieage extension, or I have final divorce papers.

My thought was maybe leaving before the divorce is final and come back with a new non-O (which cancells my marriage visa) and get a retirement visa 30 days out, regardless if the divorce is final or not.

Who out there can tell me what I need to take with me to the Consulate to get the new Non-o. Bank book? Yellow book, etc.

Thanks anyway fo those that have replied. Appreciate you all.

I got a one year multiple entry Non-Imm O at Penang.

I had to show:-

Original bank book with 800k.

Photocopy of bank book with my name.

Photocopy of bank book with the 800k entry.

Original passport.

Photocopy of passport with my name.

Original return air ticket.

Photocopy of return air ticket.

Two passport photos.

Officially, the 800k should have been in the account for two months, but the embassy wasn't too bothered about this.

Mine had been in the account for only two weeks, but, they still gave me the visa.

For the one year extension, another 800k needs to be in the account for three months and from what I have heard, they are quite strict about this.

Also, for the extension, a letter from your bank will be needed.

Thank you Karen Bravo. I will use money in bank and pension affidavit. Would only need a single entry and then do extension in CM 30 days before. The question immigration seems to want to know is why, if I have a one year extension based on marriage, do I want to change to a retired visa before my married extension is up. When I mention divorce possibility, they just say wait and come in when divorced, but no specifics.

I feel that since I qualify for a extension based on retirement anyway, why wait and go through all the hassle of trying to walk in to immigration on some final date of divorce if I can change to retirement before. Administrative divorce will hopefully take place at CM district office in Saraphi without a hassle, but I have to finish my Universsity teaching class the first week in Oct before I proceed with the divorce, so had to get the new extension yesterday based on marriage to keep my work permit valid until first week in October. We are still together so not breaking the rules.

Timing has not been good. Living a bad Thai soap opera! Wife and I will remain friends for Son's sake.

Does anyone know about Lao requirements? I have lived in Chiangmai married for 17 years. Never had to go out of country except once for new non-o when I changed from a B visa some years ago.

Thanks again KarenBrovo.

I suggest that the OP waits till his current visa extension is almost finished (for whatever reason) and goes to immigration about 10 days prior and asks for a non-O based on retirement.  This is a standard conversion and almost any visa/permit can be converted. I did it myself from a 30-day permit. You'll need all the usual copies of passport, house rental, and a letter from your embassy/consulate stating your income. Immigration will give you a new non-O based oon retirement for 90 days and then you extend that in the usual way. I'd not produce any reason for the change unless asked.  Too many bits of paper often makes the situation too confusing for the guys at the desk.  Take is all with you in case you're asked, but don't volunteer it.  There is nothing unusual in changing your reason for the visa.

If you do not have a reentry permit just visit Burma and return on 30 day entry and make normal conversion to O and retirement at immigration.

Karen, could you reiterate on the plane ticket requirements?  Return ticket to Thailand, or proof you will be leaving Thailand.  I don't think you can even buy airline tickets a year out....it can vary, but usually only 10 months.  And what type of visa had you previously been on in Thailand?

You do realize you can't (legally) work on a retirement extension?

Not exactly true. It is up to the Labour Department to say yes or no not immigration and as usual that will changed from LD to LD.

Can't help much but the one thing I do know from reading previous forums is if you are going to use the 800,000 baht in the bank you will also need your bank book and it must match the figure on the letter from the bank. Makes no difference  if it is still over the 800,000 baht.

Several posters have mentioned having to get a new letter or deposit funds to match it.

Seems silly but then again 90 day reports are silly.

Good Luck
