Hi everyone.

I am sure most of you are feeling a change in the atmosphere in Thailand recently with the reinforcement of old laws and the coming of frustrating and ridiculous new ones, I feel like this country is becoming less and less expat friendly.

I first came here in 2010 and for the first 1 and a bit years I was on a non O doing visa runs until I wanted to learn Thai quicker than I was picking it up from the streets, so I enrolled in a school with an ED visa. There is currently a shift in the laws/rules surrounding that including the reinforced ID law for foreigners and having to notify authorities if you move residence, one feels like there is a lead boot starting to clamp itself down upon me and I am even living by the book. It just seems like such a headache and a waste of time, money and effort to live here.

So, I am contemplating moving to a neighboring country and I have qualifications within graphic design, I may even want to start my own business at some point or simply freelance for a while, whatever I happen to do I wish to be able to do it without the incredible hassle and impossibilities that surround this country. I know Cambodia has a pretty easy work permit scheme for foreigners, but it's Cambodia and I have never visited there before. I also would have to pick up Khmer which I don't mind, it just would take time. Then there is Laos, I am uncertain of the visa regulations there but I do know that the language is quite similar to Thai. My 3rd option would be Malaysia which is the only one out of the three that I have visited. Even if a work permit is out of the question, being able to simply live there without dealing with the headaches here may be worth it. Can anybody offer some advice and what I should expect from these three countries?

Regards

I don't understand posts like yours. I'm from AU. Do you think people can just say "hey I'd like to live there work etc "
Where are you from in the lavish west. Bet your country wouldn't allow me to waltz in and start working (or not) and do visa runs to tick boxes. Get the right visa if you qualify or nick off.
