Thai balms, liniments, syrups and other traditional medicines

I'm leaving Thailand in a few days and would like to take some good traditional medicines with me back home. Unfortunately I don't find much info on this topic except of Wangprom ointment and Tiger balm, but I usually see lots of different medicins on the shelves at the pharmacies. It is sometimes hard to explain myself since not many people here understand any other than Thai language..

May be you could share some info with me, thanks.

Powdered Tiger penis.

Drink it once a day in tea.

Keeps mosquitos away.

Before its powdered ,you can try sucking it straight off the tiger ,it doesnt keep the mossies away ,but you will never have to worry about them again.thumbsup.gif

The OP asked a legit question, why try to ridicule him ?

I would suggest the OP doing a quick research with google, just to have some idea of what is available, then find a Thai translator, and head to a traditional medicine shop. ( there are many in Chinatown, if the OP is in Bangkok )

I know personally of a good " yellow oil " which is a remedy for a lot of different ailments, but the brand i would recommend is produced and sold in Trat.

"Here be Dragons".   Be Very Very Careful.  Buy things that are only herbal & even then be careful     Preferably consider things only with English or latin ingredients listed and then read the ingredients very carefully. If in doubt google the ingredient.  Yiu have no idea what some of them turn out to be.  Don't buy any cough medicines.  Many Thai herbal products, particularly cough remedies have opium in them. Tincture of Opium!!!   Nice thing to go through Customs on your way home with. Remember, Opium, Cannabis, Quinine & Digitalis (foxglove) are all 100% herbal; products!!!!!.  Many things that we think look like herbal remedies actually contain aspirin, paracetamol, antibiotics, antihistamines or steroidal compounds  whch makes them illegal to import into most countries.  You may think "Paracetamol" or "Aspirin" is OK.  We can buy it in petrol stations at home, no worries!!  Sorry. drugs like that are permitted in most countries but only in the brand  name & concentration approved for import into your country.    E.G.  Something real simple like Tiffy with 30% aspirin may be approved.  With 40% or 25% it may be illegal because maybe no one asked to have it approved.

With a few items carefully selected and for personal use you will roll through customs in many countries, particularly if your wife is thai and they can't be bothered reading all the labels.   But, if they see a lot of bottles & packets on xray & decide to look closer you may be in a heap of trouble.    Yellow oil as recommended by another poster may well be just fine, but read the label before you buy the particular brand.  They will not all be the same formula, guaranteed!!!!.

How do I know this to all be true for a fact?   Been there, done that, got the teeshirt.  Got away without a prosecution, JUST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
