Hi all,

A bit confused about this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My husband is applying for his family visit visa. He will be travelling with myself (british citizen) and his son (also a british citizen). he is trying to answer this question about the cost to him personally. Any idea on what this should include? should it include all our flights or only his? i guess it will include his living expenses? is there anything else that should be included.

Also the cost of the aeroplane tickets question - should this just be his ticket or all of our tickets.

Is it a good idea to buy the plane ticket before we get the visa to show, that he plans to return and also to show he will be travelling with family, will this help with the application or is it too risky?

thanks in advance

For my wife's application she put the truth 0.00. I think for your husband you ought to do the same, if he is paying for the trip himself then add it up and that's the number, if he's paying for all the tickets then include them. The onus will be on him to demonstrate that he does have the funds to cover all this, bank statements, etc.

And don't buy tickets before getting the visa, the website says that somewhere I recall.

Indeed, as the questions says; the cost to the applicant personally.

  • If he is paying for your and your son's costs then he should include these;
  • if he is paying only his own costs, include just these;
  • if he is paying nothing, then say zero.

Whichever, it would be a good idea to expand on his answer in the additional information box or in your sponsor's letter.

UKVI advise that applicants do not purchase travel tickets before obtaining their visa.

Even were you to do so, a return ticket would not be viewed as a reason to return. If someone were contemplating using a visit visa to enter the UK and then remain illegally, losing the cost of the return part of their ticket would be of little concern!

Not suggesting that you and your husband would consider such a thing, of course.
