Major roads to be closed during weekend for Bangkok Car Free Day event

BANGKOK, 17 September 2014 (NNT) – Traffic police will seal off major roads in the capital during the Bangkok Car Free Day 2014 event, which is set to take place during September 21-22.

During the annual two-day event, commuters are urged to avoid using the Sala Daeng intersection to the Narathiwat Ratchanakharin intersection from noon to 10pm on Saturday. All lanes will be closed starting midnight on September 20 until 6AM on September 22.

As the event was held to encourage the use of public transport, the public are urged to travel via the BTS sky train or the MRT underground train during the weekend.

About 20,000 cyclists are also slated to converge on Sanam Luang on Sunday at 8am. They will form a large parade of bicycles and head to Silom. Their route will follow Ratchadamnoen, Si Ayutthaya, Ratchaprarop, and Ratchadamri Roads.

Members of the public are encouraged to call the hotline 1197 around the clock to inquire more information about traffic routes or report on any road accidents.

Car free day will make for horrific traffic :P

Sent from my LG-P970 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

A step in the right direction and good on 'em, but also a total waste of time.

Dim witted idea, will prove nothing and help nothing... replacing one cacophony with another...

A Thai I doubt cannot comprehend a Car Free day..

They refuse to walk anywhere, so they will be lost....

And totally confused by this.

Typical Farang idea ??? Will come to mind...

last years "car free day" the streets were litter with plastic bottles by these cyclist wherever they stopped for a break. I remember the media and public did slam these folks for trying to be all green but in the end they littered so much they were no different, most just wanted to have a fun ride around the city.

How the hell is anyone going to take the bus with the roads closed?
