Advice Needed For British National With 1/2 Thai Child Visiting UK

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm planning on visiting my family in London with my long-term Thai partner and our 9 month old daughter. Regarding travel documents for our daughter, I am thinking of either:

  1. Applying for her UK passport
(Does anyone know/recently gone through the new process? Do I still need to register her birth at the British embassy in BKK and get a UK birth certificate before I can apply for her UK passport?)
  2. Getting her a UK visa for her Thai passport, which we already have
(In this regard, does she need to have a completely unique visa application with the VFS in Bangkok, or would she be able to apply as a dependent on her mother's visa? It's all a little bitty on their website nowadays!)

Any clarification or advice would be well received as time is flying by :-)

Thanks all!

Joe

If she has a British passport then she obviously does not need a visa for the UK.

To apply for her British passport, see Overseas British passport applications.

You do not need to register her birth at the embassy nor obtain a British style birth certificate for her; but if you do wish to do so, see Register a birth abroad.

Obviously you will need a certified translation of her Thai birth certificate.

However, as she was born outside the UK, she will only be British if you are British otherwise than by descent; see the first part of British citizenship basics. To prove this you will need your long form birth certificate. If you do not have it, see Order a copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate if you were born in England or Wales; or the relevant link from that page if born in Scotland or Northern Ireland.

If you don't wish to obtain a British passport for her, or do not have the time, then she will need a visa in her Thai passport to enter the UK.

She will need a separate application and a separate fee from her mother; though you can use the same supporting documents for both and make an appointment to submit both applications at the same time.

You may find UK visit visa basics helpful for this, and for her mother's application.
