Japan volcano: 30 hikers feared dead on Mt Ontake
Breaking news

Rescuers have found 30 hikers in critical condition, feared dead, near the peak of Mount Ontake, after Saturday's sudden volcanic eruption.

The hikers were not breathing and their hearts had stopped, reports said. Final confirmation of death in Japan always comes via a medical examination.

seems to be a lot of volcanoes erupting all around the world this past couple of months, maybe building up for 1 big eruption ..boom... the end of the world is nigh wink.png

Japan is in the Ring of Fire where most of the earth's subduction zones are. There can and have been volcanos and earthquakes anywhere along it "forever." Mt. St. Helens and Crater Lake in the US are in the Ring.

Not unusual that death is caused by asphyxiation from breathing toxic gases emitted from the volcano. Colourless, odourless (even HS aka rotten egg gas is odourless in high concentrations) and heavier than air even when hot, they simply overflow the caldera and run down the sides.
