diehard60
Nice of the man in uniform to squeeze his arm to see if he was telling the truth. Should have paid his parking fee. If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure. If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine. you should learn to read. first it was 2.30AM???? second was there a sign saying 40 baht to park there? 3rd are you sure the cop was really doing that? Popular Post hawker9000
Do you mean, if I understood you well, we, as "falangs", must carry vaseline and accept it? No wonder Thais think we're easy targets! Sorry, not my style. Good god don't any of you have any balls, do you enjoy bending over and letting any Thai give it to you, pathetic! Here's the next victim. It's not about having balls and bending over...it's all about life in a country that we are not originally from. It's about compromising... It's about learning to live in a different culture than our own. If you are not willing to compromise or learn the culture and want to live by your standards without a care in the world for the country you live in (Thailand), then why stay here? Why not just go back to your own country? It's people like you who cause all the problems and then place the blame on others. No, that's not what I'm saying at all. What does compromise mean in your vocabulary? Would you agree that living in a different country that has a different culture than the one you come from must be learned and compromises must be made and adjustments must be considered? There's a give and take you have to play in this country...it's not carrying Vaseline to make sure you lube up prior to paying an overpriced parking attendant. It's just respecting the culture and or making sure you don't get attacked by 10 Thai males with knives, machetes, sticks and guns. You learn to live in this country without having to lube up! I thought you said that was the end of it. No? OK. Let's continue. SOoooo - you want to discuss vocabulary now! OK. So when a stranger comes up and demands money from you, your "compromise" is to just give him some? Tell me, when a thug wants to shoot you, what's your "compromise" then? Let him shoot you in the leg instead of the head? Making any unreasonable demand entitles some scum to be "compromised with"? You think that because you're in a foreign country the give-me-money-or-I'll-beat-you thing represents "culture" which must be accommodated? Sure sounds like lubing up to me... It's just me now, but to ME, in my vocabulary, "compromise" means reasonable people coming to a mutually acceptable arrangement, as opposed to being victimized, intimidated or simply forced into whatever the other guy wants... "Vocabulary". That's so lame. Edited October 6, 2014 by hawker9000

MarkCyr
I wonder if a young Thai would show that much violence and lack of respect toward a 70-year-old Thai person? I doubt it. Ok, sure, the farang guy was being a d1ck about it, too. He parked in the guy's zone for a minute. He could have at least made things right with a 20 baht note for the few minutes he was parked. And as a guy who drives in Pattaya and therefore almost certainly is a resident, he ought to know how petty stuff like this can escalate and end up in Pattaya. But breaking the old guy's arm? Gimme a break! (**Whoops. No pun intended**).
Popular Post meatboy
This guy should thank his lucky stars he's still alive, re: last sentence in this article FUGITIVE CAUGHT IN PATTAYA Pattaya police were called out on the evening of Sunday, 5th October, to Soi Buakhao in South Pattaya to attend to an attack made on a British expat by a car park attendant. At the scene behind the Bangkok Bank branch, the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Volunteers were giving Mr. John Hayard first aid after he had been attacked by the attendant with a wooden stick. He was then transferred to Pattaya Memorial Hospital for a check up. Apparently, the 70 year old man parked his car in the makeshift car park and was approached by the 19 year old attendant to pay 40 baht. For some reason, they had an argument, leading to the attendant picking up the stick and hitting the Brit and then running away. Some time later, a group of men handed over 19 year old Tosapon after they chased and caught him running away from the scene. It wasn’t long before police records revealed that the young man had 7 criminal records and was wanted in nearby Chachoengsao province for attempted murder. He was detained awaiting legal proceedings. So the little scrote wasn't some innocent Thai doing his job and reacting to an 'arrogant' farang. I wonder where this leaves all the apologist prats who posted that it must have been the 'arrogant' Westerner's fault..... Cone along, let's hear what you have to say.... talk about egg on their faces more like a ton of B.S.

IAMHERE
Over less than $1.50 ... just silly not to pay up. Could have been 'how' the guy refused to pay. I have a hard time thinking the kid just decided to beat on that guys vehicle. Often as not, we on this board don't hear the whole story. MrWorldwide
OK - the kid was a scumbag with form - doesnt mean that every Thai in Pattaya is cut from the same cloth. I wonder how many Brits would enjoy being typecast alongside the likes of the Kray twins ? All of these threads degenerate into a bashfest when each of us come from countries with no shortage of lowlife scum - seems we hold uneducated Thais to a higher standard for some bizarre reason. robblok
how convienent that a piece of wood was nearby.and look at the smirk on the coppers face as he squeezes his arm. You seem to have missed the expression on the Brit's face. Obviously playing it for all it's worth. And undoubtedly he played arrogant Khun Farang when approached by the attendant. He certainly is to be congratulated on saving the Baht 40. Stupid Brit trying to get away without paying. Probably did not feel he had too as it was just a short stop. But of course the violence was over the top but some foreigners think they can get away with anything. Your reference to his nationality is stupid and not relevant to the story at all. Then you go a level lower in stupidity with " some foreigners think they can get away with anything " How stupid a comment is that ???!!!! He is not a criminal trying to get away with anything at all. He's being scammed and has objected, then the coward assaults him, a man of 70 , with a piece of wood . He's a coward. Please reply with more stupidity. He is a Brit is he not .. was it in the topic title yes or no. so its relevant. I still feel that if you park somewhere that is paid for parking you should pay. (if he was not in that area id retract my remark). Then the guy got out and started to fight with a far younger man (that is stupid in my book) I have seen arrogant foreigners bossing Thais around.. who knows he might be one of those. But as i stated the violence is way over the top but if he was in a paid for area and did not pay then its theft.

Gimme a break! (**Whoops. No pun intended**). It always difficult to generalize when talking about "Thai culture," but having been here for a few decades I can say, with conviction, that twenty years ago it would almost be unheard of for a young person to fight an elderly person--in Thai culture, at that time, young people were taught to show respect to older people. That part of Thai culture is still part of the cultural stream, but too many young people are ignoring it. There has been a rather dramatic cultural shift on this point. I remember seeing a picture of an elderly Thai monk being struck in the head by a young Thai (generation zero) male when the "reds" and "yellows" were going at it in Bangkok. That was astonishing to me....that is never supposed to happen and goes completely against traditional Thai culture/values. Not only did this generation zero Thai male have no respect for elderly people, he had no respect for an elderly monk. The ship is sinking, IMHO. tgeezer
I've lived here in Thailand for 11 years and I'm sickened by what I'm seeing these days. It's not the same place I moved to. Times change. Tourist places are populated by people who have been attracted by the chance to get easy money, in the role of whores, pimps, bent taxi drivers, hustlers etc. they are not 'normal'. I am happy that my area still seems to be free of overt bad behaviour, at least before nine o'clock at night. I can only hope that as economic decline reduces the 'crop per acre' the bad elements are not forced to increase the size of their plot beyond Sukumwit, Patpong , Soi cowboy etc.

If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure. If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine. They have no legal capacity to fine him at all in the UK. They can sue him for provable losses (i.e. IF he uses a private car park and doesn't pay for parking AND the car park was full AND they turned away another potential parker because the car park was full THEN they can sue him for the parking fee they lost from the new parker not being able to park and any reasonable administration costs). In practice they just write off the losses. Edited October 7, 2014 by wprime
Popular Post Munger
I feel sorry for the attendant. Probably getting 400 baht a day wages, far away from home, trying to earn an honest living. Having to deal with ignorant sexpats all day/night, who are paranoid about getting ripped off, must be soul-destroying. People using the car park and driving away without paying deserve a fine but this poor by just lost the plot. What's he supposed to do - go to the police? Add all this onto the fact that his female relatives are probably forced into prostitution - can anyone really blame him. The most pathetic reply on this thread from a Thai apologist. What is this nonsense that his female relatives are probably" FORCED" into prostitution ? Please get of the Pattaya bar stool, and dont believe what the prostitutes tell you.
Popular Post marinediscoking
There are so many pu*sies in this tread! Now I know why I have to put up with the rip off's, the over charging and the out-right scams in Thailand. People like you are the reason they exists and according to you anyone who stands up to them has is coming, as they somehow deserve it and should just be ripped off all the time like them. Well you guys should pat yourselves on the back as you have accomplished your goal for creating the environment for this to happen. You all must be very small statured men. The victim was told to pay after returning to his truck. Now if the lot of you have ever spent any amount of time in Thailand would know, you either pay in advance or get a ticket to pay after for parking. This was an extortion attempt as there is "no parking lot" in that area of Soi Diana. If the thief had 2 or 3 people to back him up then you pay to avoid injury. There are places where they do charge illegally for parking but even they ask first for the parking fee, so you have the choice to pay it or move on. This 70 year man at least has a set of balls and can live with himself afterwords knowing that, he may have a broken arm but a firm spine. To all the other sheep's just go quietly into the night as you always do.
jomcondo
If he worked for the lot I would've paid. He was just some punk trying to collect some easy money. KittenKong
This was an extortion attempt as there is "no parking lot" in that area of Soi Diana. As far as I can see this all happened ".... at a car park opposite the Diana Dragon Apartments in Soi Buakhao", not Soi Diana. And there is indeed a car park very near there. It has a sign indicating the price and a barrier indicating where the car park begins and ends. So for me the only real question is whether the driver parked inside the car park or outside. The victim was told to pay after returning to his truck. Now if the lot of you have ever spent any amount of time in Thailand would know, you either pay in advance or get a ticket to pay after for parking. This is true, though I suppose the attendant may have been absent or otherwise occupied when the driver pulled up. Of course the important point here is that no one should be beaten up with lump of wood over a 40B parking ticket. But I do wonder if the driver did anything to annoy the attendant and provoke him, albeit unwittingly?
