Dutch man accused of killing Thai girlfriend with Samsung tablet

BANGKOK: -- A Dutch national was arrested this afternoon while on the run in Cambodia after he allegedly smashed his Thai girlfriend with a tablet to death at their home outside of Bangkok.

Mathew Mannen, 40, was caught by border police at his hotel room in the Koh Kong province of Cambodia and confessed to murdering his girlfriend Pornpan Kaewkok-klang, 35, police said, because she went on Facebook despite his forbidding it.

Pornpan was found dead by her father yesterday at the home she lived with Mannen in Nakhon Pathom province. Police estimated she had been dead more than three days. With a large wound on her head, police concluded she was smashed with a broken Samsung tablet nearby.

A handwritten message in English, believed to have been written by Mannen and addressed to the deceased, was found on the wall.

Sad story indeed, another day in the life (and death) of Thailand. Many people die from consuming tablets not by being hit with one.

They think that marriage is the prerogative of every human on the planet. The fact is if you are of a controlling nature, or have a quick temper you really should be living on your own rather than becoming a risk to someone else and making their life miserable. If you are still single at 40 in your own country there is probably a very good reason why.

RIP to Pornpan Kaewkok-klang and sincere condolences to friends and family very sad state of affairs when it gets to this stage , I always thought that my I pad would be the death of me but this puts a total new meaning to that now, hope the Dutch man gets a long long time in prison preferably one without Wifi

Womens faces and skulls are not anywhere as strong as a man, and can take significantly less of a beating so to speak. A good strike to the skull or too the face could easily kill if in the right place, even a severe concussion could easily result. So the leap from there to a fatal injury is not at all too far, men especially farang guys in general are much bigger than Thai ladies.

All that said, he must of hit her with some serious anger to kill her out cold that he did not even try to call for assistance, unless that was his intention. Over freaking facebook, weak.

He was reported in the Thai press as saying he didn't hit her with the laptop as widely reported but pushed her and she fell over, hitting her head on a wardrobe and dying.

However police said they don't believe him since there were marks all over her body not just the head as though she was the victim of a violent assault.

If somebody swung a tablet at you, in a fit of rage, and caught you in the wrong place with the edge of the machine, then not only could you die but there would be a reasonable chance the tablet could still be used afterwards.

If the reason for this assault was for being on FB as has been reported, then it is such a tragic waste of life. RIP to the victim.

Personally, I'm quite happy my wife goes up on facebook,skype and whatnot.

Else she would want my attention day and night and besides, she learns how to handle a computer, which is good for our future and lives.

Samsung tablets are quite sturdy.

Mine is made partially of metal, I guess it could be used as a murder weapon but I won't try to find out.

Awful publicity for Samsung. Sorry for the victim. It's difficult for a gal to gauge whether the guy she's hooking up with is a good guy. It's an age-old dilemma. Of course it goes also for men first meeting women, but I think on average, guys are more prone to inflicting harm, and are certainly adept at hiding that fact when first meeting, and wanting to get in the good graces of a pretty girl.

In sum: here's some paternalistic advice for pretty young single women: Continue to be wary. Men on the prowl will try every trick in the book to try to get in your panties. Keep 'em at arms length for a few weeks, which will give you time to gauge whether he's decent or whether his charm offensive is a facade.
