Mexico 'drug lord' Carrillo arrested

(BBC) The alleged leader of the Juarez drug cartel - one of Mexico's most powerful crime syndicates - has been arrested, government officials say.

Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, known as "the Viceroy", was held in the northern city of Torreon.

The arrest is the latest in a series of high profile operations against drug lords in Mexico this year.

He is said to have waged war with the rival Sinaloa gang over control of trafficking routes to the US.

The war left thousands dead in and around Ciudad Juarez on the border with the United States between 2009 and 2011.

The US had offered a reward of $5m for his arrest.

Unlike Thailand, many times the big guys are gotten in Mexico and South America. But, does it make any difference? No, there is always someone else ready to fill the vacancy. The war on drugs can never be won. Wake up and legalize it and end the violence, loss of lives and huge waste of money.

Unlike Thailand, law enforcement in the West cannot receive rewards for doing their job.

And his arrest will have a zero impact on the supply, price or availability of drugs anywhere in the world and may even result in even more needless deaths. Something the USA and is war on drugs policy just don't get

And periodically, in Mexico, there are large scale prison breaks, where gunmen break these guys out.
