Thousands flock to ex-Patong Mayor's funeral
Saran Mitrarat

PHUKET: -- Traffic on Patong Hill has been heavier than usual since Thursday as thousands of locals flock to attend funeral rites for ex-Patong Mayor Pian Keesin, who died at his home in Patong on Tuesday (Oct 7) aged 71.

Local dignitaries including Phuket Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak, Kathu District Chief Sayan Chaichanawong and recently appointed Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup were among the VIPs who have gone to pay their respects at the Keesin family home, where Pian’s body is lying in repose until the cremation ceremony on October 18 at Laem Petch Temple in Patong.

Pian Keesin was born in Phuket and married to Mrs Srikum Keesin. He leaves five children: Ms Premrada Keesin; Mr Patawee Keesin; Mr Preechawuth Keesin; Mr Pakrit Keesin; and Mr Pamut Keesin.

Pian, although controversial, contributed a lot to Patong’s economy and shaped the tourism industry that exists today. He helped establish the bungalow estate, which was

developed into Patong Bay Garden Resort. He was also instrumental in preventing tin mines being built along the Andaman coast.

Pian also participated in the protests against the operation of Chalermpon Co Tour Bus at Phuket International Airport as well as at tourist destinations such as Patong.

"and shaped the tourism industry that exists today." - he sure did, and have a look at the sad state it's in.

He sure did, and not for the better of Patong, much for the better of his own pocket.

I'm in tears now.

Much admired and respected by farangs?

The police should photograph the attending mourners much the same as the FBI used to photograph mob weddings and funerals.

They can then figure out who were the corrupt business owners and others that benefited from his mafia like rule and control.
