TAT launches campaign to promote family-friendly destinations

BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is launching a new campaign to promote family-friendly destinations in the country in a bid to boost the economy.

TAT Director of Product Promotion Pataraporn Sithivanich said recognizing the importance of family units in the tourism sector, the body has decided to publish the Family Holiday Guidebook, which will be distributed to the public, free of charge. The guidebook contains lists of attractions, activities and accommodation that are family-friendly and can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

With an aim to encourage families to travel more for leisure, the campaign will also promise to generate income for the local economy of family destinations.

The book categorizes destinations into 7 types, which include learning centers, museums, zoos and restaurants. The TAT has already set up sample tours for two of the recommended tour routes in the book. They are Chonburi’s Sattahip district and Nakhon Ratchasima’s Khao Yai.

Family members can visit the Sea Turtles Conservation Center and scuba dive in Chonburi and can take an agro tour around the Thai-Danish dairy farm and join a walk rally in Khao Yai.

The TAT hopes to also help foster strong bonds between family members through travel with the campaign. Strong family relationships have influence on the well-being of families and increase interactions between parents and children and help them connect on a deeper level.

Between January and September, international arrivals at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport were 9.1 million, down from 11.3 million in the same period last year, a 19% fall, according to the Immigration Police Bureau. The bureau also reported that visitors from all regions, with the exception of Eastern Europe, had plunged between five and 30%.

The TAT is preparing to launch another campaign called '24 Hours Enjoy Thailand' to attract foreigners to visit the country under martial law. According to the agency, martial law actually benefits tourism because it ensures that foreigners are safe round-the-clock.

Words rarely fail me ….

(Too bad the same can't be said for TAT. Take a holiday, fellows.)

Thais are really thrashing around now.

i wonder how many new tourism campaigns TAT launches per year? Seems like I see a new one announced around once a week. And then I wonder how many are considered successful and how many are failures? TAT probably don't even know although I'm sure they will say the great, great majority are successful.

It's almost like during the Gulf War when a rocket launching or artillery unit would shoot their weapons and then get the heck out of that firing location...many times not knowing if their weapons hit the intended target...Shoot and Scoot tactic they called it....TAT seems to use such a tactic with their very frequent new campaigns. Probably some retired general running TAT like most every other govt/semi-govt agency in Thaland.

Would be nice if they first started with the Thai families who are already here.

I know of two Brit tourists who would disagree...If they were still able to.

Dad are we there yet?

I don't believe you.

Strong family bonds as in ' I don't want to go there Dad, I want to go to ... or I'm not going '.

Amazing how Thais can decide what's best for foreigners and of course speak on their behalf without permission a la KT.

So I suppose Ko Tao and Pattaya will not be on the list,

and the more seedier parts of Bangkok, also down South,

good luck with the latest promotion, you are going to need it.

regards Worgeordie

I'd like a definition of family friendly from TAT. Its ridiculous, the whole country seems to be 1 big CHILD BRAIN. They can't possibly believe people buy into this nonsense...

The new tourism minister, is the wife of one of the 1000 plus generals

We see indecision at its best here , one moment TAT are promoting tourist related tours for Coup related topic's , then we move two days later to a family - friendly Thai packages , well that all depends on that Thai smile , regardless , carry on chaps you are doing a great job , just don't get both package deals mixed up , otherwise we could see the family unit being whisked up to Chiang Mai for Bird watching , in a Tank.

LOL Maybe they've hired Baghdad "We're pounding them" Bob as a consultant. Somehow I suspect this will be yet another TAT launch that fails to reach orbit and disintegrates safely out of sight over the horizon.

Taking a child to a country under marshal law is an offence under the family law courts (If say you were separated but get shared time)

In Australia if you packed up the kids without your wife's knowledge (though she knew your holiday was abroad ) and she took you to family court, they would restrict your visit time.

Far from a deeper understanding with your children as claimed it would be a "F#$King Nightmare" legally.

They were not insured had armed soldiers at times nearby- who are controlled by men Barred from Australian soil.

Who might detain their father for disagreeing with one of their weird ideas ?

It amounts to child protection failure-

As for married couples with kids its plain reckless and seen as Bad parent Behaviour .

Teachers don't want to know about how Mummy and daddy let you sit on the Armed personal Carrier and take pics.

Though thats all legal -

Its certainly not seen as Quality tourism

If I had a family Thailand is one of the last places I'd take them. Atrociously dangerous roads, dodgy electrical insulation everywhere, lack of lifeguards at swimming pools, in fact never seen one, dangerous to walk on the pavements, porn, sex aids and assorted filth on open display in road markets, poorly maintained rides at theme parks, zoos that are not up to international standards and the assorted scams all visitors here have to try and dodge.

My work has me helping businesses out of sticky situations. If Thailand was my client I would be advising them to stop shouting right now. Best that they let this one pass and focus their money and energy on next year. Whatever they say, no matter how many campaigns they create, they will be advertising to a public who has faced news throughout the year on how this paradise has failed time and again. Whatever they spend now will show considerably less value than if they spend it in 8-10 months from now and make the 2015/2016 high season one of the biggest ever.

TAT. My freebie. Shut up. Use this time wisely. Come back stronger.

Who are they advertising to and where? Because I've never seen at TAT ad in the UK.

Are we talking about billboards in Swampy arrivals hall?

They release marketing packs to agencies in target countries with implementation advice. This information is then used to form campaigns by these agencies. Rarely will you see a TAT advert in your country.

It is not a dead horse, it is a blinkered one.

Thai do think they are the centre of the universe; they have been inculcated to think this and are detached from reality.

This is nothing new just a rehash of earlier campaigns that obviously failed. I remember going to Pattaya in 1997 when they had a campaign to attract families there, hi kiddies welcome the biggest open air brothel in the world! idiots.

From sattahip to khao yai?

Via 304? Truly a life shortening experience for the uninitiated.

I am not sure of your point. Can think of nothing attractive on that journey; perhaps your point. Khao Yai the Pattaya of "natural beauty"!

I'll never forget the time I saw a young farang family, with two kiddies, go into a strip club on Walking St.

How's that for family entertainment?

It certainly involves a lot of Verbal Diarrhea.

Good question. From what I have seen the TAT is one of the most boondoggle and junket-ridden government "authorities" around. Most of these announcements are so ridiculous that I suspect they are entirely for internal consumption only to further justify their existence.

Not forgetting the perfect 331----Ha Ha 5555555555555 at your peril. After Korat---the H 2.......is near as bad to Udon.
