Hey All,

Saw a monk today buying lottery tickets with a fag hanging out his mouth, isn't that a bit wrong? I mean what money is he spending on the lottery, hope its not money from offerings!

Monks smoking is not so unusual, not common, but not unusual.

As for 'buying lottery tickets', most sellers are disadvantaged/disabled ... is that also a crime to provide them, the seller, some small commission?

Was it a piece of PR excellence ... probably not.

Was it really your business ... probably not.

ryanhull ... I'm sure you are a Saint beyond reproach.

As for me ... I'm a little more humble ... should I start throwing rocks ... my glass house will come quickly crashing down.

listen...what's wrong wid you folks?...regular guys go to the wat for a few days/weeks to make merit and they got to wear the robes, shave their heads and etc to do it right...they are not monks!...and you see 'em downtown havin' a beer, buyin' lottery tickets and etc just like everyone else...

the monks are the guys that chant during a house warming or when someone dies, etc...the usual ceremonial duties that we got priests, pastors for in the west...

(here's an ignorant falang tutsi in high dudgeon down the market and there is a guy wid robes drinkin' beer and checkin' out the women: 'yew take off dem robes yew fake POS!...')

Catholic brothers..similar to monks.

Drink booze, smoke and that's the allowable stuff. Give me a Buddhist monk above a catholic brother anytime.

Whatever turns you on dear

Leave the brothers to you Elmer ..live in peace

Can't see how being puritanical has anything to do with holiness.

The irony is probably related to he precepts that the Monk (Buddha) is supposed to follow.

However, as someone else pointed out, the sighting may well have been of a "part timer", making merit, not a Monk as such.

We foreigners may not fully understand this and wrongly think that all those who wear the robe are Monks.

I also thought it strange that wearers of the "Robe" have money, smoke, wear shoes, buy food and drink and have many possessions etc.

However, I have learned to accept this is Thailand and all part of Thai culture.

BTW, why do most Wat's have so many statues that look like images of space ships LOL

Considering what different words can mean in different parts of the world, it is unclear what act is denoted in the last three words of this subject

Some Monks are Millionaires, so

Well it would interesting how those that have given up material posessions have accumalated wealth they have no desire for?

many were rich before they became monks and others are to recepients of gifts from the laity.

Thai people I have spoken to in the past have no problem with a monk smoking but it is very bad if caught drinking alcohol.

I'd bet my pak-o-mah that Aussieroaming A. Went to a Catholic school. Or B. Was raised in a Catholic institution.

As good as these places are in so many respects, they also produce lifelong bigots who ejaculate venom whenever the Catholic Church is mentioned.

Chill out bro, you're in Thailand now.

Don't you have better things to do with your day than sticking your nose in where it's not wanted .... it's his business, not yours.

Smoking monk turns into millionaire ...... now that's a story worth telling ..... wai2.gif
