Traveling Visa Exempt, Travel time is 31 days. Problem?

Featured Replies

I'm traveling from the United States. My intention was to stay 30 days, and I purchased tickets which have me arriving at Suvarnaphumi at 21:05 on October 29, departing 21:45 on November 28th. I just sat down and counted the days and I now realize the time in Thailand spans 31 days (if you count October 29 as a whole day), not 30 days. Will this cause me a problem at check-in at the United States, since I do not have a visa? Or, when I go through immigration at Suvarnaphumi? By the time I get off the plane and on my way to immigration, it will be darn close to midnight... Will that make a difference (that is, if I simply waited until the stroke of midnight to go through immigration, would that make everything OK)? It was a silly oversight on my part and I'm not trying to break any laws or regulations, but I suppose that may be thin gruel for a strict immigration officer trying to do his or her job.

What's the consensus? Should I change my tickets, or take my chances?

For one day overstay you will not be fined at the airport. Or as you said, kill time at the duty free and be stamped on Oct 30th.

I think the airline at boarding will use the same common sense.

Unfortunately, common sense is not something that can be programmed into the computers that the airline staff use. If it's over 30 days, they might require proof of onward travel if that is the rule that is in place so either change you ticket and return one day earlier or be prepared to buy a "disposable" ticket online before they will let you board.

As said, with a one day overstay there will be no fine and you will get a small stamp in your passport. But, if you are stopped by the BIB on that day, say on the bus to airport, you could be arrested. Will the BIB use the same common sense rule as the airline staff should?

I have had several overstays due to medical ranging from 1-4 days and even a 10 day.

It has never prevented me re-entry to Thailand and I have never been stopped and had my passport requested while in BKK or anywhere else.

I have booked numerous air tickets for 60+ days and it has never caused me a problem at the US ticket counter. One time I explained that I intended to travel to Myanmar once I arrived and the ticket agent said have a nice trip.

The only thing ticket agents look for is a Return ticket.

Relax and enjoy.

Might work for the airline but not the BIB!

As the OP said, he can be stamped in after midnight. He has nothing to worry.

Many thanks, everyone, for the helpful comments. My connection in Seoul is very short -- I often get switched to the later flight. So, waiting til midnight might be forced upon me by circumstance, anyway. That is probably the best course of action.

If you are there before midnight and you wait, just make sure that the officer changes the date on his stamp before he stamps you in. I'm sure that he doesn't have an "alarm clock" set to midnight.

I have been standing in line at the stroke of midnight and everything shutdown for a bit while the officers changed their stamps.

O for pete sakes one day will not matter
